Jane: A Murder
by Nelson, Maggie
2005 | ISBN: 1932360719 | Soft Skull Press | 224 pages | mobi | 192 KB
Part elegy, part true crime story, this memoir-in-verse from the author of the award-winning The Argonauts expands the notion of how we tell stories and what form those stories take through the story of a murdered woman and the mystery surrounding her last hours. Jane tells the spectral story of the life and death of Maggie Nelson's aunt Jane, who was murdered in 1969 while a first-year law student at the University of Michigan. Though officially unsolved, Jane's murder was apparently the third in a series of seven brutal bang-murders in the area between 1967 and 1969. Nelson was born a few years after Jane's death, and the narrative is suffused with the long shadow her murder cast over both the family and her psyche. Exploring the nature of this haunting incident via a collage of poetry, prose, dream-accounts, and documentary sources, including local and national newspapers, related "true crime" books such as The Michigan Murders and Killer Among Us , and fragments from Jane's own diaries written when she was 13 and 21, its eight sections cover Jane's childhood and early adulthood, her murder and its investigation, the direct and diffuse effect of her death on Nelson's girlhood and sisterhood, and a trip to Michigan Nelson took with her mother (Jane's sister) to retrace the path of Jane's final hours. Each piece in Jane has its own form, and the movement from each piece to the next―along with the white space that surrounds each fragment―serve as important fissures, disrupting the tabloid, "page-turner" quality of the story, and eventually returning the reader to deeper questions about girlhood, empathy, identification, and the essentially unknowable aspects of another's life and death. Equal parts a elegy, memoir, detective story, meditation on violence (and serial, sexual violence in particular), and conversation between the living and the dead, Jane 's powerful and disturbing subject matter, combined with its innovations in genre, shows its readers what poetry is capable of―what kind of stories it can tell, and how it can tell them.

We Want Everything: A Novel (Verso Fiction)
by Nanni Balestrini
English | 2014 | ISBN: | Verso Books | pages | epub | 931 KB
Explosive novel of Italy's revolutionary 1969 by leading Italian novelist
It was 1969, and temperatures were rising across the factories of the north as workers demanded better pay and conditions. Soon, discontent would erupt in what became known as Italy's "Hot Autumn."
A young worker from the impoverished south arrives at Fiat's Mirafiori factory in Turin, where his darker complexion begins to fade from the fourteen-hour workdays in sweltering industrial heat. He is frequently late for work, and sells his blood when money runs low. He fakes a crushed finger to win sick leave. His bosses try to withhold his wages. Our cynical, dry-witted narrator will not bend to their will. "I want everything, everything that's owed to me," he tells them. "Nothing more and nothing less, because you don't mess with me."
Around him, students are holding secret meetings and union workers begin halting work on the assembly lines, crippling the Mirafiori factory with months of continuous strikes. Before long, barricades line the roads, tear gas wafts into private homes, and the slogan "We Want Everything" is ringing through the streets. Wrought in spare and measured prose, Balestrini's novel depicts an explosive uprising. Introduced by Rachel Kushner, the author of the best-selling The Flamethrowers, We Want Everything is the incendiary fictional account of events that led to a decade of revolt.

I Was Trying to Describe What It Feels Like: New and Selected Stories
by Noy Holland
English | 2017 | ISBN: 1619028468 | Counterpoint | 400 pages | epub | 666 KB
"These new and selected stories testify to the fact that there are still fine short story writers out there, doing the hard job of serious literary production in our age of tweets and memes...Holland's language is challenging, elliptical, bristling with sensations and resounding with the interior lives of complicated, recognizable people." ― The New York Times Book Review
In the twenty years since her first short story collection, The Spectacle of the Body , Noy Holland has become a singular presence in American writing. Her second and third collections, What Begins With Bird and Swim for the Little One First , secured her reputation as a writer who excels and excites, her prose described as unsettling and acutely wrought, rhythmic and lyrically condensed. Following the recent publication of Bird , her first novel, I Was Trying to Describe What It Feels Like is a gathering of stories, the majority of which have never before been published in book form. Set on two continents and ranging in length from a single page to a novella, these stories beguile and disrupt; they remind us of the reach of our compassion and of the dazzling possibilities of language.
"I Was Trying to Describe What it Feels Like," from which the collection takes its title, is part love song, part fever dream―a voice demanding the ecstatic. Holland's stories do not indulge in easy emotions, and they keep to the blessedly blurred frontier between poetry and prose.

Shootout At Cold Creek
Matt Bodine and Sam Two Wolves don't look for trouble--it's usually there when they wake up in the morning. When they ride into the little gold mining town of Jordanville, high in the Colorado Rockies, all they want is a hot meal and something cold to wash it down.
When they see an unarmed man getting brutally beaten by a hard case with a bullwhip, their plans suddenly change. Before they can spit, the blood brothers find themselves in the middle of a violent land war and up to their noses in claim jumpers and hired guns itching to open fire. English | ISBN: | Random House | pages | epub | 330 KB
To Penelope Butler the family was all, the sole ambition of her adult life. Three of her four daughters, however, had different ideas. Rosemary rejected it; Jess was destroyed by it; Celia found it eluded her. Only Emily pursued her mother's ideal, with disastrous results. Penelope begins to record their family story as it unfolds. But when Rosemary discovers these private papers she is enraged by her mother's distortions of the truth and proceeds to tell the story from her perspective. Mists Over Mosley
by John Greenwood
English | ISBN: | Pan Macmillan | pages | epub | 375 KB
"Witchcraft," the Assistant Chief Constable said. "I beg your pardon?" "A witches' coven in Marldale." The tiny village of Upper Marldale is being overwhelmed-by a mischievous coven of witches. Neither believers nor non-believers can explain why the church clock winds itself up without assistance, why a row of winter cabbages is suddenly struck down in the night, or why not one cat in the village will venture forth after dusk. Marldale is the territory of the deceptively brilliant Inspector Jack Mosley, and his exasperated superiors wish he would get on with solving these nagging little incidents. But nagging soon becomes nightmarish when a sculptor is found hanging from her ceiling beam. A whiff of local corruption tickles Mosley's nose, and he and his sidekick set off into the bracing northern air to seek the reasons and parties behind both the supernatural and the homicidal.

Brethren
by W. A. Hoffman
English | W. A. Hoffman | pages | epub | 648 KB
Raised by Wolves is an epic gay historical romance - in the classic sense - told in four parts and set in the Caribbean during the infamous buccaneer period of the late 1660's. This is not a series, per se, but one very long novel divided into four volumes. Each book can be read separately, but it is highly suggested that one starts at the beginning. The story chronicles the pivotal years of the life of duelist and dilettante, John Williams, Viscount of Marsdale, aka Will among the Brethren of the Coast, and his relationship with madman and physician, Gaston the Ghoul, once known as Gabriel Sable, the Comte de Montren.Raised by Wolves is the story of a man who embarks on a voyage of self-discovery revolving around his committed relationship to a man far more troubled than he is. This love provides the catalyst for Will to mature, confront the demons of his youth, understand true love, define his spirituality, and determine what kind of legacy he will leave in the world. Raised by...

A Harp in Lowndes Square
by Rachel Ferguson
1936 | ISBN: 1911413732 | Dean Street Press | 302 pages | azw3 | 581 KB
In the collegeroom in Lowndes Square, a child, in her ugly, unsuitable frock of plum-coloured satin, cut down when discarded from one of her mother's, bent over the cutting out of a doll and its cardboard wardrobe, and shivered as she worked. Hilarious, shocking, and heartbreaking in turn, A Harp in Lowndes Square is like no other Rachel Ferguson novel. Perhaps her most personal work - and the closest she ever came to a ghost story - it tells of Vere and James, twins gifted with 'the sight,' which allows them to see and even experience scenes from the past (including one, at Hampton Court, involving royalty). The twins are already aware of their mother's troubled relationship with her own mother, the formidable Lady Vallant, but the discovery of an Aunt Myra, who died young and of whom their mother has never spoken, leads them to uncover the family's tragic past. Against the backdrop of World War I and Vere's unexpected relationship with an aging actor (and his wife), and rife with Ferguson's inimitable wit, the novel reaches a powerful and touching denouement when the twins relive the horrifying events of many years before . A Harp in Lowndes Square was originally published in 1936. This new edition features an introduction by social historian Elizabeth Crawford. 'It is only (now) that I realise how much . my work owes to the delicacy and variety of Rachel Ferguson's exploration of the real and the dreamed of, or the made up, or desired.' A.S. Byatt 'A wonderful concoction . the true stuff of storytelling.' Gillian Tindall

Young and timid but full of sturdy good sense and awakening sophistication, Lily Wilson arrives in London in 1844, becoming a lady's maid to the fragile, housebound Elizabeth Barrett. Lily is quickly drawn to her mistress's gaiety and sharp intelligence, the power of her poetry, and her deep emotional need. It is a strange intimacy that will last sixteen years.

Wesley the Owl
by Stacey O'Brien
English | 2008 | ISBN: | Atria Books | pages | epub | 1000 KB
On Valentine's Day 1985, biologist Stacey O'Brien first met a four-day-old baby barn owl -- a fateful encounter that would turn into an astonishing 19-year saga. With nerve damage in one wing, the owlet's ability to fly was forever compromised, and he had no hope of surviving on his own in the wild. O'Brien, a young assistant in the owl laboratory at Caltech, was immediately smitten, promising to care for the helpless owlet and give him a permanent home. Wesley the Owl is the funny, poignant story of their dramatic two decades together.
With both a tender heart and a scientist's eye, O'Brien studied Wesley's strange habits intensively and first-hand -- and provided a mice-only diet that required her to buy the rodents in bulk (28,000 over the owl's lifetime). As Wesley grew, she snapped photos of him at every stage like any proud parent, recording his life from a helpless ball of fuzz to a playful, clumsy adolescent to a gorgeous, gold-and-white, macho adult owl with a heart-sh...

Saint Monkey
by Jacinda Townsend
English | 2014 | ISBN: 0393350827 | W. W. Norton & Company | 368 pages | epub | 839 KB
Fourteen-year-old Audrey Martin, with her Poindexter glasses and her head humming the 3/4 meter of gospel music, knows she'll never get out of Kentucky-but when her fingers touch the piano keys, the whole church trembles. Her best friend, Caroline, daydreams about Hollywood stardom, but both girls feel destined to languish in a slow-moving stopover town in Montgomery County.
That is, until chance intervenes and a booking agent offers Audrey a ticket to join the booming jazz scene in Harlem-an offer she can't resist, not even for Caroline. And in New York City the music never stops. Audrey flirts with love and takes the stage at the Apollo, with its fast-dancing crowds and blinding lights. But fortunes can turn fast in the city-young talent means tough competition, and for Audrey failure is always one step away. Meanwhile, Caroline sinks into the quiet anguish of a Black woman in a backwards country, where her ambitions and desires only slip further out of reach.
Jacinda Townsend's remarkable first novel is a coming-of-age story made at once gripping and poignant by the wild energy of the Jazz Era and the stark realities of segregation. Marrying musical prose with lyric vernacular, Saint Monkey delivers a stirring portrait of American storytelling and marks the appearance of an auspicious new voice in literary fiction.
