Leveraging Technology as a Response to the COVID Pandemic
by Paul Frisch (Editor), Harry Pappas (Editor)
English | 2022 | ISBN: 0367769301 | 239 pages | True PDF | 13.77 MB
In 2019 the world was struck with the Coronavirus (COVID-19) infecting major portions of the world's population. There were no vaccines or treatments available to help mitigate the disease or offer a cure. The world's health systems were inundated with massive numbers of patients with varying ranges of symptoms, acuity, and levels of criticality. The world's healthcare organizations soon found themselves in an unmanageable situation, directly impacting the ability to manage patients across the entire healthcare environment. Most healthcare institutions had plans for emergency preparedness and procedures to deal with temporary crises, none of which were effective against the impact of COVID-19. COVID-19 was a highly contagious disease, resulting in high volumes of admissions with long lengths of stay. The virus quickly overwhelmed institutions with large patient volumes, resulting in shortages of patient beds, medical equipment, personal protective devices, cleaning agents, and other critical supplies. Hospital operations were further impacted by staff shortages due to exposure, resulting contagion, the shutdown of transit systems, and responsibilities at home due to college and business closures.
This timely and important book describes the impact on the hospital ability to provide patient care and how healthcare institutions leveraged diverse technology solutions to combat the impact of COVID-19 on providing patient care. The authors also discuss implementation of these technology solutions and the many lessons learned of how healthcare institutions can enhance their emergency preparedness in the future from the COVID experience.
The authors would like to acknowledge, thank, and dedicate this book to the hundreds of thousands of healthcare workers around the world who spent countless hours and put their own lives and families lives at risk to help patients though this pandemic.

Revitalising ASEAN Economies in a Post-COVID-19 World: Socioeconomic Issues in the New Normal
by Hooi Hooi Lean (Editor)
English | 2022 | ISBN: 9811228469 | 283 pages | True PDF/EPUB | 14.77 MB
The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic was reported in China in December 2019, and later spread to other parts of the world. Countries in Southeast Asia were some of the first nations affected by the pandemic due to their geographical proximities and trade relations with China. In January 2020, the virus spread to some countries within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The number of confirmed cases kept increasing within ASEAN and other countries of the world. Consequently, countries in ASEAN introduced preventive and containment measures to cope with the pandemic, which include quarantines, lockdowns, restrictions of movements and large gatherings, as well as college and business closures.
Beyond the efforts of preventing and containing the spread of the virus, ASEAN's most significant challenges are the social and economic crisis of historic proportions that are beginning to unfold. COVID-19 pandemic has brought interruptions in all sectors of ASEAN economies. It is, therefore, imperative to assess the extent to which the pandemic has impacted the social and economic aspects of the region. This book intends to highlight the social and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in ASEAN and suggest ways on how to mitigate them. It covers how the shocks from COVID-19 have impacted production, supply chains, demand, commodity prices, consumer behaviour, financial markets, employment, services, transportation and community, and the various policies that ASEAN authorities should put in place to mitigate the effects of the pandemic.

Consuming Crisis: Commodifying Care and COVID-19
by Francesca Sobande
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1529793971 | 161 pages | True PDF EPUB | 8.08 MB
Consuming Crisis is a crucial account of how consumer culture capitalized on Coronavirus (COVID-19). Sobande explores how brands claim to care while they encourage people to 'keep calm and consume'. This critical analysis of the power and politics of marketing examines an eclectic mix of campaigns, content, and experiences. Such work outlines the societal significance of fast-fashion adverts, banana bread's pandemic 'moment', university social media strategies, and how digital technology mediates memories and work. Based on the belief that brands cannot be activists, Sobande creatively considers how brands construct care, camaraderie, culture, and so-called 'normal' life during times of crisis.
Francesca Sobande is a Senior Lecturer in Digital Media Studies at Cardiff University

EU Fiscal Capacity: Legal Integration After Covid-19 and the War in Ukraine
by Federico Fabbrini
English | 2022 | ISBN: 0198874235 | 182 pages | True EPUB | 5.46 MB
The explosion of the Covid-19 pandemic in February 2020 led to a paradigm change in the European Union architecture of economic governance. To mitigate the pandemic's damage, the EU established a Recovery Fund called 'Next Generation EU' (NGEU). Funded though resources raised on the financial markets, this special budget is worth 750bn€ at 2018 prices, which corresponds to 806,9bn€ at current prices. Disbursed to member states in the form of both loans
and grants and to be repaid on a long-term basis through the introduction of new EU taxes, the NGEU has endowed the EU with borrowing, spending, and taxing powers.
EU Fiscal Capacity: Legal Integration After Covid-19 and the War in Ukraine argues that the NGEU constiutes a profound overhaul in the EU architecture of economic governance. Moving away from the fiscal surveillance shown in response to the euro-crisis, the EU has adopted a strategy of fiscal federalism more akin to the United States.
The return of war in Europe following 75 years of peace has caused yet more socio-economic damage for the EU. Occuring as Europe was slowly re-emerging from the pandemic, the war in Ukraine has disrupted supply chains, increased humanitarian assistance costs, and generated an energy crisis. Within the context of war, the limitations of the current EU constitutional arrangements have yet again been exposed. EU Fiscal Capacity argues that the EU needs to retain the NGEU as a permanent
feature of EMU.
The first book to analyse how the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have affected Europe's Economic & Monetary Union from an EU law and policy perspective, this book is a must read for policy makers and students of European law and politics alike.

Data Science Applications of Post-COVID-19 Psychological Disorders
by Vijayalakshmi Kakulapati (Editor)
English | 2022 | ISBN: 979-8886971651 | 314 pages | True PDF | 19.1 MB
The COVID-19 epidemic has thrown the globe into chaos as governments struggle to contain the virus's spread. While considerable attention has been paid to health problems, reports of the social-psychological impacts of this pandemic are on the increase, ranging from mental distress and personal disputes to racial assaults and patriotic behaviors. Moreover, these social-psychological impacts may have long-term repercussions that will likely outlast the epidemic. Globally, the physical impacts of COVID-19 may be felt. The influence of Post-COVID-19 on mental health is a subject that has not been well explored. The reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic may resemble the response to natural catastrophes or other comparable catastrophic occurrences affecting a community and may create chronic anguish in the afflicted population. The psychological reaction to the Covid-19 epidemic has been immediately recorded; in communities rarely affected, it resembles symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The unfavorable psychological effects of COVID-19, such as anxiety and depression, have been widely expected but have not yet been precisely quantified. Data science enables academics to evaluate the past and future consequences of mental diseases on the United States and worldwide populations.

by Mustafa Polat (Editor), Serhat Burmaoglu (Editor), Ozcan Saritas (Editor)
English | 2022 | ISBN: 303113141X | 323 pages | True PDF EPUB | 20.04 MB
This timely book presents a collection of expert insights into the impacts of COVID-19 in a broader socio-economic context. In each chapter, the authors identify the current impact of COVID-19 by demonstrating transformative signals and project these signals to the future by considering their alternative futures and implications.
The book emphasizes that dealing with major global pandemics like COVID-19 requires all countries and regions to take different, but synchronized measures to decrease its socio-economic effects in the short, medium and long run. The consequences of COVID-19 will go beyond medicine to cover all other aspects of life and are bound to change the nature of organizations. Moving beyond the medical viewpoint, the experts in this book discuss the topic from multi-dimensional and multi-disciplinary angles by focusing on the domains of technology, business, finance, marketing, law, public administration, and education.

Covid-19 Responses of Local Communities around the World: Exploring Trust in the Context of Risk and Fear
by Khun Eng Kuah (Editor), Gilles Guiheux (Editor), Francis K.G. Lim (Editor)
English | 2022 | ISBN: 978-1032270760 | 211 pages | True PDF | 5.01 MB
Presenting a wide range of international case studies, the contributors to this book study the impact of Covid-19 on the risks faced by communities around the globe.
Examining cases from the Americas, Europe and Asia - including Mexico, Brazil, China, India, France, and Belgium - Kuah, Guiheux, Lim and their collaborators look at how communities have coped with the social and economic impacts of the pandemic, as well as the public health concerns. Using a framework of risks, fear, and trust, they evaluate how the global health crisis has both revealed and exacerbated a deep crisis of confidence in institutions and systems around the world. In reaction to this they also look at how individuals, social groups and communities have faced fears and built trust at a more local level. The units of spatial analysis in these cases include urban cities, neighbourhoods, slum settlements, migrant camps, colleges, markets and homes, for a broad spectrum of case types and rich empirical data.
Essential reading for social scientists including sociologists, anthropologists and scholars of other disciplines looking to understand the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic internationally and on a multi-scalar level.

Lockdown: Social Harm in the Covid-19 Era
by Daniel Briggs (Author), Luke Telford (Contributor), Anthony Lloyd (Contributor), Anthony Ellis (Contributor), Justin Kotzé (Contributor)
English | 2021 | ISBN: 303088824X | 504 Pages | PDF EPUB | 11 MB
This book asks whether the decision to lock down the world was justified in proportion to the potential harms and risks generated by the Covid-19 virus. Drawing on global, empirical data, it explores and exposes the social harms induced by lockdowns, many of which are 'hidden', including joblessness, mental health problems and an intensification of societal inequalities and divisions. It offers data-driven case studies on harms such as domestic violence, child abuse, the distress of being ordered to stay at home, and the numerous harms associated with the new wealth industries. It explores why some people weren't compliant with lockdown restrictions and examines the already vulnerable social groups who were disproportionally affected by lockdown including those who were locked in (care home residents), locked up (prisoners), and locked out (migrant workers, refugees). The book closes with a brief discussion on what the future might look like as we enter a post-Covid world, drawing on cutting-edge social theory.

Mechanical Ventilation Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Guide for Physicians and Engineers
by Amir A. Hakimi (Editor), Thomas E. Milner (Editor), Govind R. Rajan (Editor), Brian J-F Wong (Editor)
English | 2022 | ISBN: 3030879771 | 267 pages | True PDF EPUB | 22.72 MB
The surge in COVID-19 cases leading to hospitalizations around the world quickly depleted hospital resources and reserves, forcing physicians to make extremely difficult life-or-death decisions on ventilator allocation between patients. Leaders in academia and industry have developed numerous ventilator support systems using both consumer- and industry-grade hardware to sustain life and to provide intermediate respiratory relief for hospitalized patients. This book is the first of its kind to discuss the respiratory pathophysiology underlying COVID-19, explain ventilator mechanics, provide and evaluate a repository of innovative ventilator support devices conceived amid the pandemic, and explain both hardware and software components necessary to develop an inexpensive ventilator support device. This book serves both as a historical record of the collaborative and innovative response to the anticipated ventilator shortage during the COVID-19 pandemic and as a guide for physicians, engineers, and DIY'ers interested in developing inexpensive transitory ventilator support devices.

Learning from COVID-19: GIS for Pandemics
by Este Geraghty (Editor), Matt Artz (Editor)
English | 2022 | ISBN: 1589487117 | 250 pages | True EPUB | 9.38 MB
Now that the health community is in a state of reflection, how do we put the lessons learned into practice?
As we step back to examine the worldwide response to the COVID-19 pandemic, now is the time to think about how to raise the bar for our response to the next public health emergency. Now is the time to revisit health preparedness strategies and plans. And now is the time to review what the health community did that worked-and how we can do that again.
Learning from COVID-19: GIS for Pandemics tells real-life stories about how spatial thinking became invaluable in both local and full-scale outbreaks during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Needing to answer the question of "where" sat at the forefront of everyone's mind, and using a geographic information system (GIS) for real-time surveillance transformed possibly overwhelming data into location intelligence that provided agencies and civic leaders with valuable insights.
Co-edited by Esri chief medical officer Dr. Este Geraghty, this book highlights best practices, key GIS capabilities, and lessons learned during the COVID-19 response that can help communities prepare for the next crisis. GIS has empowered:
Organizations to use human mobility data to estimate the adherence to social distancing guidelines
Communities to monitor their health care systems' capacity through spatially enabled surge tools
Governments to use location-allocation methods to site new resources (i.e., testing sites and augmented care sites) in ways that account for at-risk and vulnerable populations
Communities to use maps and spatial analysis to review case trends at local levels to support reopening of economies
Organizations to think spatially as they consider "back-to-the-workplace" plans that account for physical distancing and employee safety needs
Learning from COVID-19 also includes a "next steps" section that provides ideas, strategies, tools, and actions to help jump-start your own use of GIS, either as a citizen scientist or a health professional. A collection of online resources, including additional stories, videos, new ideas and concepts, and downloadable tools and content, complements this book.
Now is the time to use science and data to make informed decisions for our future, and this book shows us how we can do it.
