Description
When you first start out, the process of painting and shading skin in CG can be a daunting undertaking, riddled with both technical and artistical challenges. Too often the creative process will grind to a halt due to either a technical problem or uncertainty of the best way to progress.
This course will take you through the entire process from A to Z, teaching you a production proven workflow for creating skin textures and building skin shaders used by professional vfx artists in studios all around the world. We will delve deep into both the technical aspects of the workflow, as well as the creative thought process behind our decisions, making sure to explain not only the "how" but also the "why" of we use these techniques.
This way of painting textures is one that I use on a daily basis as a senior visual effects artist, and is filled to the brim with techniques that I have personally used on anything from small local commercials to Hollywood blockbuster feature films.
My hope for this course is to leave you with a thorough understanding of how to paint and shade CG skin for any type of character, as well as the confidence to both apply and adjust the workflow to whatever personal or professional project you undertake going forward as a character artist.

While I do try to cover every part of the tools and techniques we use throughout the course, this is not a Mari or Maya fundamentals course, and some prior knowledge of working with 3D software is recommended. If anything is unclear, feel free to ask questions in the Q&A section and I will do my best to fill in the gaps.

Clear definitions: A factotum is someone hired to do a variety of jobs, someone who has many different responsibilities, or a jack-of-all-trades.
Rich context: Batman's butler, Alfred, is a factotum. He keeps the affairs of the Wayne estate in order, maintains and repairs the Batmobile, and even offers his employer sage advice.
Personal connections: Think of a person in your life who is a jack-of-all-trades. When you think of the word factotum, attach it to a memory of this person.
Exploring the morphology: The root fac is from the Latin verb facio, meaning "to make or do" and the Latin word totum means "all." Thus, a factotum is literally someone who can do it all.
Semantic chunking: Schema are your brain's "file folders" which link your newly-learned word to things you already know. Connect your new word, factotum, with familiar people, as well as words that share the fac root, such as factory and manufacture.
To aid in providing clear definitions, rich context, personal connections, morphology, and schema development, Professor Flanigan organizes these lectures by theme. This allows you to fully understand the differences between closely related synonyms and gives your brain the opportunity to create connections and file new words in long-term memory.

Footlong words: Sesquipedalian, an adjective that means "given to the overuse of long words," was inspired by the Roman poet, Horace, who often criticized others for using long, pompous-sounding words. He used the phrase sesquipedalia verba-literally "words a foot and a half long."
A large part of a word's etymology is its morphology, including the Latin or Greek roots from which it sprang. Approximately 70% of English vocabulary is derived from Latin or Greek affixes or roots, and the number increases to over 90% for scientific jargon. These fascinating lectures delve into affixes and roots from Latin and Greek, as well as words that English borrowed from other languages, including German, Yiddish, Japanese, Gaelic, the romance languages, and more.

If you are an avid reader, you may have previously encountered some of the words in this course. Go inside the Jewish shtetls, most of which were destroyed during World War II.

Professor Liulevicius is an ideal guide for this course, having focused on Germany and Eastern Europe during his entire academic career. This course starts from the incompatibility between Galileo's principle and Maxwell's equations, and expands on that in order to consistently formulate Special Relativity and later on, in the second part of the course, General Relativity. The other main purpose is to stimulate students to develop the mathematical intuition required to fully grasp and appreciate the contents of these subjects. Therefore, EVERY equation in this course will be motivated. Besides, other key concepts such as: Lagrangian mechanics (i.e. the Action Principle, Lagrange equations), tensors, will be fully covered in the course. The main prerequisites to the course are Calculus and Multivariable Calculus, especially: the divergence theorem, vectors, dot and cross products, matrix multiplication, determinants. Some (basic) knowledge of Classical physics is recommended, such as: scalar potential, Newton laws, Kinetic energy, Energy conservation, Wave equation (and I mean just the mathematical form of the equation).

In the first part of the course Lorentz transformations are derived in two different ways. The mathematics to be able to follow this part can be more easily digested than the mathematics required to follow the part on General Relativity. For General Relativity, it is recommended to follow along with a piece of paper and pencil and derive the equations. Please make sure that you meet the prerequisite requirements.
