Nonlinear System Theory-W Rugh
pdf | 1.89 MB | Author :Anne Farrow

Book Description :

A startling and superbly researched book demythologizing the North's role in American slavery

"The hardest question is what to do when human rights give way to profits. . . . Complicity is a story of the skeletons that remain in this nation's closet."-San Francisco Chronicle

The North's profit from-indeed, dependence on-slavery has mostly been a shameful and well-kept secret . . . until now. Complicity reveals the cruel truth about the lucrative Triangle Trade of molasses, rum, and slaves that linked the North to the West Indies and Africa. It also discloses the reality of Northern empires built on tainted profits-run, in some cases, by abolitionists-and exposes the thousand-acre plantations that existed in towns such as Salem, Connecticut. Here, too, are eye-opening accounts of the individuals who profited directly from slavery far from the Mason-Dixon line.

Culled from long-ignored documents and reports-and bolstered by rarely seen photos, publications, maps, and period drawings- Complicity is a fascinating and sobering work that actually does what so many books pretend to do: shed light on America's past.

Calvet R G - Treatise Of Plane Geometry Through Geometric Algebra
pdf | 3.99 MB | Author :J. L. Berggren and R. S. D. Thomas

Book Description :

The book contains a translation and study of Euclid's Phaenomena, a work which once formed part of the mathematical training of astronomers from Central Asia to Western Europe. Included is an introduction that sets Euclid's geometry of the celestial sphere, and its application to the astronomy of his day, into its historical context for readers not already familiar with it. So no knowledge of astronomy or advanced mathematics is necessary for an understanding of the work. The book sho mathematical astronomy shortly before the invention of trigonometry, which allowed the calculation of exact results and the subsequent composition of Ptolemy's Almagest. The Phaenomena itself begins with an introduction (possibly not by Euclid) followed by eighteen propositions set out in geometrical style about how arcs of the zodiacal circle move across the sky. The astronomical application is to the small arc of that circle occupied by the Sun, but the Sun is not mentioned. This work and the (roughly) contemporaneous treatises of Autolycus and Aristarchos form a corpus of the oldest extant works on mathematical astronomy. Together with Euclid's Optics one has the beginnings of the history of science as an application of mathematics. Copublished with the London Mathematical Society beginning with Volume 4.

Partial Differential Equations And Mathematica-Kythe
pdf | 11.97 MB | Author :Administrator

Book Description :

Early training in the elementary techniques of partial differential equations is invaluable to students in engineering and the sciences as well as mathematics. However, to be effective, an undergraduate introduction must be carefully designed to be challenging, yet still reasonable in its demands. Judging from the first edition's popularity, instructors and students agree that despite the subject's complexity, it can be made fairly easy to understand.

Revised and updated to reflect the latest version of Mathematica, Partial Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems with Mathematica, Second Edition meets the needs of mathematics, science, and engineering students even better. While retaining systematic coverage of theory and applications, the authors have made extensive changes that improve the text's accessibility, thoroughness, and practicality.

New in this edition:
[*]Upgraded and expanded Mathematica sections that include more exercises
[*]An entire chapter on boundary value problems
[*]More on inverse operators, Legendre functions, and Bessel functions
[*]Simplified treatment of Green's functions that make it more accessible to undergraduates
[*]A section on the numerical computation of Green's functions
[*]Mathemcatica codes for solving most of the problems discussed
[*]Boundary value problems from continuum mechanics, particularly on boundary layers and fluctuating flo
[*]Wave propagation and dispersion

With its emphasis firmly on solution methods, this book is ideal for any mathematics curricula. It succeeds not only in preparing readers to meet the challenge of PDEs, but also in imparting the inherent beauty and applicability of the subject.

Armstrong - Truth And Truthmakers
pdf | 910.15 KB | Author :D. M. ARMSTRONG

Book Description :

Truths are determined not by what we believe, but by the way the world is. Or so realists about truth believe. Philosophers call such theories correspondence theories of truth. Truthmaking theory, which now has many adherents among contemporary philosophers, is the most recent development of a realist theory of truth, and in this 2004 book D. M. Armstrong offers the first full-length study of this theory. He examines its applications to different sorts of truth, including contingent truths, modal truths, truths about the past and the future, and mathematical truths. In a clear, even-handed and non-technical discussion he makes a compelling case for truthmaking and its importance in philosophy. His book marks a significant contribution to the debate and will be of interest to a wide range of readers working in analytical philosophy.

Brecher - Getting What You Want A Critique Of Liberal Morality
pdf | 981.96 KB | Author :Bob Brecher

Book Description :

We know leadership isn't exclusive to corner offices and multimillion-dollar budgets--some of the best leaders are the mentors and technicians who are more comfortable behind the scenes. But what if being an effective leader isn't just about having innovative ideas and high levels of productivity? What if becoming a great leader is more about prioritizing self-awareness and people skills than production and performance?

Help! I Work with People is not a book about leadership theory, but rather a handbook on how to connect with people and influence them for good.

With his signature transparent and relatable storytelling, Chad Veach uses modern research and biblical principles to encourage you to lean into your leadership potential regardless of your level of influence or experience. In short and easily digestible chapters, he addresses the three phases of becoming a quality leader:
· learning to lead the hardest person you will ever be in charge of--yourself
· recognizing the power of becoming a people person
· creating a culture and environment where the team's shared vision can grow
People are the most important part of life.

Let's learn how to lead as if we like each other.

Crusades (Very Short Introduction) - Oxford
pdf | 5.25 MB | Author :Christopher Tyerman

Book Description :

Crusading fervour gripped Europe for over 200 years, creating one of the most extraordinary, vivid episodes in world history. Whether the Crusades are regarded as the most romantic of Christian expeditions, or the last of the barbarian invasions, they have fascinated generations ever since, and their legacy of ideas and imagery has resonated through the centuries, inspiring Hollywood movies and great works of literature. Even today, to invoke the Crusades is to
stir deep cultural myths, assumptions and prejudices.

Yet despite their powerful hold on our imaginations, our knowledge of them remains obscured an distorted by time. Were the Crusaders motivated by spiritual rewards, or by greed? Were the Crusades an experiment in European colonialism, or a manifestation of religious love? How were they organized and founded?

With customary flair and originality, Christopher Tyerman picks his way through the many debates to present a clear and lively discussion of the Crusades; bringing together issues of colonialism, cultural exchange, economic exploitation, and the relationship between past and present.

Griffith - Socialism And Superior Brains The Political Thought Of Bernard Shaw
pdf | 996.41 KB | Author :Gareth Griffith

Book Description :

The world is working exactly as designed.

The combustion engine which is destroying our planet's atmosphere and rapidly making it inhospitable is working exactly as we designed it. Guns, which lead to so much death, work exactly as they're designed to work. And every time we "improve" their design, they get better at killing. Facebook's privacy settings, which have outed gay teens to their conservative parents, are working exactly as designed. Their "real names" initiative, which makes it easier for stalkers to re-find their victims, is working exactly as designed. Twitter's toxicity and lack of civil discourse is working exactly as it's designed to work.

The world is working exactly as designed. And it's not working very well. Which means we need to do a better job of designing it. Design is a craft with an amazing amount of power. The power to choose. The power to influence. As designers, we need to see ourselves as gatekeepers of what we are bringing into the world, and what we choose not to bring into the world. Design is a craft with responsibility. The responsibility to help create a better world for all.

Design is also a craft with a lot of blood on its hands. Every cigarette ad is on us. Every gun is on us. Every ballot that a voter cannot understand is on us. Every time social network's interface allo a stalker to find their victim, that's on us. The monsters we unleash into the world will carry your name.

This book will make you see that design is a political act. What we choose to design is a political act. Who we choose to work for is a political act. Who we choose to work with is a political act. And, most importantly, the people we've excluded from these decisions is the biggest (and stupidest) political act we've made as a society.

If you're a designer, this book might make you angry. It should make you angry. But it will also give you the tools you need to make better decisions. You will learn how to evaluate the potential benefits and harm of what you're working on. You'll learn how to present your concerns. You'll learn the importance of building and working with diverse teams who can approach problems from multiple points-of-view. You'll learn how to make a case using data and good storytelling. You'll learn to say NO in a way that'll make people listen. But mostly, this book will fill you with the confidence to do the job the way you always wanted to be able to do it. This book will help you understand your responsibilities.

Hegel, G W F - Philosophy Of Right
pdf | 778.83 KB | Author :G.W.F. Hegel

Book Description :

What is rational is actual and what is actual is rational.

Hegel's Outlines of the Philosophy of Right is one of the greatest works of moral, social, and political philosophy. It contains significant ideas on justice, moral responsibility, family life, economic activity, and the political structure of the state - all matters of profound interest to us today.

Hegel's aim is to lay out the various forms that human freedom must take on, if it is to be true freedom. He seeks to show that genuine human freedom does not consist in doing whatever we please, but involves living with others in accordance with publicly recognized rights and la. Hegel demonstrates that institutions such as the family and the state provide the context in which individuals can flourish and enjoy full freedom. He also demonstrates that misunderstanding the true nature of
freedom can lead to crime, evil, and poverty. His penetrating analysis of the causes of poverty in modern civil society was to be a great influence on Karl Marx. Hegel's study remains one of the most subtle and perceptive accounts of freedom that we possess. This new edition combines a revised
translation with a cogent introduction to his work.
ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Logic And Theism - Arguments For And Against Beliefs In God
pdf | 7.49 MB | Author :JORDAN HOWARD SOBEL

Book Description :

This is a wide-ranging 2004 book about arguments for and against beliefs in God. The arguments for the belief are analysed in the first six chapters and include ontological arguments from Anselm to Gödel, the cosmological arguments of Aquinas and Leibniz, and arguments from evidence for design and miracles. The next two chapters consider arguments against belief. The last chapter examines Pascalian arguments for and against belief in God. There are discussions of Cantorian problems for omniscience, of challenges to divine omnipotence, and of the compatibility of everlasting complete knowledge of the world with free-will. There are appendices that present formal proofs in a system for quantified modal logic, a theory of possible worlds, notes on Cantorian set theory, and remarks concerning non-standard hyperreal numbers. This book will be a valuable resource for philosophers of religion and theologians and will interest logicians and mathematicians as well.

On The Trinity, Books 8-15 (History Of Philosophy) - Augustine - Cambridge
pdf | 1.11 MB | Author :Augustine

Book Description :

An appropriate motto for Augustine's great work On the Trinity is 'faith in search of understanding'. In this treatise Augustine offers a part-theological, part-philosophical account of how God might be understood in analogy to the human mind. On the Trinity can be fairly described as the first modern philosophy of mind: it is the first work in philosophy to recognize the 'problem of other minds', and the first to offer the 'argument from analogy' as a response to that problem. Other subjects that it discusses include the nature of the mind and the nature of the body, the doctrine of 'illumination', and thinking as inner speech. This volume presents the philosophical section of the work, and in a historical and philosophical introduction Gareth Matthe places Augustine's arguments in context and assesses their influence on later thinkers.
