Amar sin saber a quien was first printed in a surrepti tious volume of Lope de Vega's plays published, accord ing to the title-page, at Saragossa spurious edition of twelve plays is of con tance in the history of literature. It contained two masterpieces, Ruiz de Alarcon's La Verdad sospecliosa, incorrectly at tributed to Lope de Vega, and Amar sin saber a quién, plays which Pierre Corneille, a pioneer in the writing of French comedies, imitated in Le M entear (1642) and La suite da M entear (1644) respectively. Corneille's attempt to twist Amar sin saber a quién into a sequel to Le M entenr was a conspicuous failure.
Lope de Vega's play reappeared in print in a volume of his comedies published at Madrid in 163 5. The strong protest of the title-page is too interesting to be relegated to a foot-note: ventidos (sic) Parte perfeta de las come dias del F enix de Espana Frey Lope Felix de Vega Car pio sacadas de sus verdaderos originales, no adultera das como las que hasta aqui han salido. The work was published by two booksellers, Domingo de Palacio y Villegas and Pedro Verges, the latter, curiouslyenough in view of the solemn remonstrance just quoted, having been publisher of the first edition. The contents of the two editions are almost wholly difierent, and the text only slightly more accurate and reliable in the second edition than in the first. Spanish writers did not see their works through the press nor read their printers'

The primary aim of this collection is to show that the topicality of Lacan's legacy to contemporary philosophy is particularly evident with regard to current debates which, in attempting to overcome the spurious divide between continental and analytic traditions, as well as between the human, social and natural sciences, have been thoroughly rethinking the notions of realism and materialism, along with their implications for aesthetics, ethics, politics, and theology. More or less explicitly, all the essays included in the present volume tackle such a complex speculative articulation by focusing on the way in which a Lacanian approach can shed new light on traditional concepts of Western philosophy, if not rehabilitate them. The 'new' in the 'new generation' that gives the title to the present collection of articles is far from rhetorical. All the authors included are under fifty years of age, most are under forty, and some are even under thirty. Without exception, they have, however, already secured a prominent position in debates concerning the relation between philosophy and psychoanalysis, or are in the process of doing so. The other contiguous novelty of this volume that marks a major shift from previous attempts at presenting Lacan in dialogue avec les philosophes is its markedly international dimension. Contributors reside and work in seven different countries, which are, moreover, not always their countries of origin.
