pdf | 1.36 MB | English | Dan Shapiro | 2016 | Page: 238

Book Description :

Author, pediatrician, and developmental- behavioral expert Dan Shapiro, MD, divides his new parenting guide, Parent Child Journey, into ten different "miles." Each mile represents an interactive session that brings you closer to understanding your child's behavior and learning effective strategies.

The first mile includes the "Gander," an assessment tool Shapiro developed to help describe your child's developmental profile-and yours too. Respecting the different learning styles of children and parents, he presents the Gander in a variety of ways: as a standard rating scale with explanatory text, but also as a picture, a song, and a map. Then, Shapiro takes parents through nine other sessions, continuing to present his evidence-based training program as a uniquely creative integration of standard discussion, real-life vignettes, richly illustrated fable, worksheets, and homework assignments.

Throughout Parent Child Journey, Shapiro emphasizes, "Just because your child's behavior may be complicated, does not mean it is incomprehensible." Parent Child Journey combines serious help with whimsical presentation-supporting and teaching parents, even as it engages and entertains. With this comprehensive new guide, Shapiro reassures parents that they are not alone on this journey.

pdf | 1.92 MB | English | Michael F. Holt | 2017 | University Press of Kansas | Page: 364

Book Description :

Because of its extraordinary consequences and because of Abraham Lincoln's place in the American pantheon, the presidential election of 1860 is probably the most studied in our history. But perhaps for the same reasons, historians have focused on the contest of Lincoln versus Stephen Douglas in the northern free states and John Bell versus John C. Breckinridge in the slaveholding South. In The Election of 1860 a preeminent scholar of American history disrupts this familiar narrative with a clearer and more comprehensive account of how the election unfolded and what it was actually about. Most critically, the book counters the common interpretation of the election as a referendum on slavery and the Republican Party's purported threat to it. However significantly slavery figured in the election, The Election of 1860 reveals the key importance of widespread opposition to the Republican Party because of its overtly anti-southern rhetoric and seemingly unstoppable rise to power in the North after its emergence in 1854. Also of critical importance was the corruption of the incumbent administration of Democrat James Buchanan-and a nationwide revulsion against party.

Grounding his history in a nuanced retelling of the pre-1860 story, Michael F. Holt explores the sectional politics that permeated the election and foreshadowed the coming Civil War. He brings to light how the campaigns of the Republican Party and the National (Northern) Democrats and the Constitutional (Southern) Democrats and the newly formed Constitutional Union Party were not exclusively regional. His attention to the little-studied role of the Buchanan Administration, and of perceived threats to the preservation of the Union, clarifies the true dynamic of the 1860 presidential election, particularly in its early stages.

Book Description :

A comprehensive treatment of Ismaili medieval history in its entirety. It will have great appeal to all scholars of medieval .,. Farhad Daftary is one of the world's leading authorities on Ismaili history and literature. This important book, by an internationally acknowledged expert in Ismaili studies, introduces Ismaili history and thought in medieval times. Discussing the different phases in Ismaili history, it describes both the early Ismailis as well as the contributions of the later Ismailis to ---c culture. A number of chapters deal with key Ismaili individuals such as Hasan-i Sabbah. Other chapters contextualise the Ismailis within the early '. societies, in addition to investigating the Ismaili-Crusader relations and the resulting legends on the Ismaili secret practices. Over the course of the work, it becomes clear that Ismaili historiography, and the perception of the Ismailis by others (in both '. and Christian milieus), have had a fascinating evolution. During their long history the Ismailis have often been accused of various heretical teachings and practices and - at the same time - a multitude of myths and misconceptions have ciculated about them.
Farhad Daftary here separates myth from fact, propaganda from actuality, in a work characterised by his customary mastery of the sources and literature.

pdf | 10.19 MB | English |978-0817353674 | Dr. Trudy Griffin-Pierce | 2006 | University Alabama Press | Page: 214

Book Description :

A gripping story of the cultural resilience of the descendants of Geronimo and Cochise.               This book reveals the conflicting meanings of power held by the federal government and the Chiricahua Apaches throughout their history of interaction. When Geronimo and Naiche, son of Cochise, surrendered in 1886, their wartime exploits came to an end, but their real battle for survival was only beginning. Throughout their captivity in Florida, Alabama, and Oklahoma, Naiche kept alive Chiricahua spiritual power by embodying it in his beautiful hide paintings of the Girl's Puberty Ceremony-a ritual at the very heart of tribal cultural life and spiritual strength.             This narrative is a tribute to the Chiricahua people, who survive today, despite military efforts to annihilate them, government efforts to subjugate them, and social efforts to destroy their language and culture. Although federal policy makers brought to bear all the power at their command, they failed to eradicate Chiricahua spirit and identity nor to convince them that their lower status was just part of the natural social order. Naiche, along with many other Chiricahuas, believed in another kind of power. Although not known to have Power of his own in the Apache sense, Naiche's paintings show that he believed in a vital source of spiritual strength. In a very real sense, his paintings were visual prayers for the continuation of the Chiricahua people. Accessible to individuals for many purposes, Power helped the Chiricahuas survive throughout their history.             In this book, Griffin-Pierce explores Naiche's artwork through the lens of current anthropological theory on power, hegemony, resistance, and subordination. As she retraces the Chiricahua odyssey during 27 years of incarceration and exile by visiting their internment sites, she reveals how the Power was with them throughout their dark period. As it was when the Chiricahua warriors and their families struggled to stay alive, Power remains the centering focus for contemporary Chiricahua Apaches. Although never allowed to return to their beloved homeland, not only are the Chiricahua Apaches surviving today, they are keeping their traditions alive and their culture strong and vital.
