Our Riches
epub | 1.61 MB | English | Kaouther Adimi | 2020 | New Directions | Page: 160
About Our Riches :
The powerful English debut of a rising young French star, Our Riches is a marvelous, surprising, hybrid novel about a beloved Algerian bookshop
Our Riches celebrates quixotic devotion and the love of books in the person of Edmond Charlot, who at the age of twenty founded Les Vraies Richesses (Our True Wealth), the famous Algerian bookstore/publishing house/lending library. He more than fulfilled its motto "by the young, for the young," discovering the twenty-four-year-old Albert Camus in 1937. His entire archive was twice destroyed by the French colonial forces, but despite financial difficulties (he was hopelessly generous) and the vicissitudes of wars and revolutions, Charlot (often compared to the legendary bookseller Sylvia Beach) carried forward Les Vraies Richesses as a cultural hub of Algiers.
Our Riches interweaves Charlot's story with that of another twenty-year-old, Ryad (dispatched in 2017 to empty the old shop and repaint it). Ryad's...

But as Void introduces her to levels and layers of magic she never even knew existed, she finds herself fighting desperately to keep up, to defeat challenge after challenge to prove her worth to study under him ... perhaps, even, to survive a training course that has killed other - lesser - magicians.
And, when Void sends her to a kingdom she's never visited, on a mysterious mission she has to figure out for herself, she finds herself facing a choice that could destroy her ...
... Or unleash a nightmare that could destroy an entire kingdom.

Ebola The Natural and Human History of a Deadly Virus
epub | 1.45 MB | English | David Quammen | 2014 | W. W. Norton & Company | Page: 129
About Ebola The Natural and Human History of a Deadly Virus :
"A frightening and fascinating masterpiece of science reporting that reads like a detective story." -Walter Isaacson
In 1976 a deadly virus emerged from the Congo forest. As swiftly as it came, it disappeared, leaving no trace. Over the four decades since, Ebola has emerged sporadically, each time to devastating effect. It can kill up to 90 percent of its victims. In between these outbreaks, it is untraceable, hiding deep in the jungle. The search is on to find Ebola's elusive host animal. And until we find it, Ebola will continue to strike. Acclaimed science writer and explorer David Quammen first came near the virus while he was traveling in the jungles of Gabon, accompanied by local men whose village had been devastated by a recent outbreak. Here he tells the story of Ebola-its past, present, and its unknowable future.

The Perfect Vehicle What It Is About Motorcycles
epub | 1.67 MB | English | Melissa Holbrook Pierson | 1997 | W. W. Norton & Company | Page: 241
About The Perfect Vehicle What It Is About Motorcycles :
"This book, a polished, winding meditation on the theory and fractiousness of motorcycles, celebrates both their eccentric history and the wary pleasures of touring."-The New YorkerIn a book that is "a must for anyone who has loved a motorcycle" (Oliver Sacks), Melissa Pierson captures in vivid, writerly prose the mysterious attractions of motorcycling. She sifts through myth and hyperbole: misrepresentations about danger, about the type of people who ride and why they do so. The Perfect Vehicle is not a mere recitation of facts, nor is it a polemic or apologia. Its vivid historical accounts-the beginnings of the machine, the often hidden tradition of women who ride, the tale of the defiant ones who taunt death on the racetrack-are intertwined with Pierson's own story, which, in itself, sho that although you may think you know what kind of person rides a motorcycle, you probably don't.

English National Identity and Football Fan Culture Who Are Ya
pdf | 1023.1 KB | English | Gibbons, Tom. | 2014 | Ashgate; 1 edition | Page: 209
About English National Identity and Football Fan Culture Who Are Ya :
In recent years, scholars have understood the increasing use of the St George's Cross by football fans to be evidence of a rise in a specifically 'English' identity. This has emerged as part of a wider 'national' response to broader political processes such as devolution and European integration which have fragmented identities within the UK. Using the controversial figurational sociological approach advocated by the twentieth-century theorist Norbert Elias, this book challenges such a view, drawing on ethnographic research amongst fans to explore the precise nature of the relationship between contemporary English national identity and football fan culture. Examining football fans' expressions of Englishness in public houses and online spaces, the author discusses the effects of globalization, European integration and UK devolution on English society, revealing that the use of the St George's Cross does not signal the emergence of a specifically 'English' national consciousness, but in fact masks a more complex, multi-layered process of national identity construction.
A detailed and grounded study of identity, nationalism and globalization amongst football fans, English National Identity and Football Fan Culture will appeal to scholars and students of politics, sociology and anthropology with interests in ethnography, the sociology of sport, fan cultures, globalization and contemporary national identities.

The Universe of Quadrics
pdf | 52.16 MB | English | Boris Odehnal | 2020 | Springer; 1st ed. 2020 edition | Page: 608
About The Universe of Quadrics :
The Universe of Quadrics
This text presents the theory of quadrics in a modern form. It builds on the previously published book "The Universe of Conics", including many novel results that are not easily accessible elsewhere. As in the conics book, the approach combines synthetic and analytic methods to derive projective, affine, and metrical properties, covering both Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometries.
While the history of conics is more than two thousand years old, the theory of quadrics began to develop approximately three hundred years ago. Quadrics play a fundamental role in numerous fields of mathematics and physics, their applications ranging from mechanical engineering, architecture, astronomy, and design to computer graphics.
This text will be invaluable to undergraduate and graduate mathematics students, those in adjacent fields of study, and anyone with a deeper interest in geometry. Complemented with about three hundred fifty figures and photographs, this innovative text will enhance your understanding of projective geometry, linear algebra, mechanics, and differential geometry, with careful exposition and many illustrative exercises.

Square Haunting Five Writers in London Between the Wars by Francesca Wade
epub | 5.06 MB | English | Francesca Wade | 2020 | Faber & Faber | Page: 432
About Square Haunting Five Writers in London Between the Wars by Francesca Wade :
'Outstanding. I'll be recommending this all year.' Sarah Bakewell
'A beautiful and deeply moving book.' Sally Rooney
'I like this London life . . . the street-sauntering and square-haunting.' Virginia Woolf, diary, 1925
In London during the interwar years, five women's lives intertwined around one address. Mecklenburgh Square, on the radical fringes of Bloomsbury, was home to activists, experimenters and revolutionaries; among them were the modernist poet H. D., detective novelist Dorothy L. Sayers, classicist Jane Harrison, economic historian Eileen Power, and author and publisher Virginia Woolf. In an era when women's freedoms were fast expanding, they each sought a space where they could live, love and - above all - work independently.
From the square, these trailblazing women pushed the boundaries of scholarship, literary form and social norms. Taking us...

Sons of War by Nicholas Sansbury Smith
epub | 660.82 KB | English | Nicholas Sansbury Smith | 2020 | Blackstone Publishing | Page: 368
About Sons of War by Nicholas Sansbury Smith :
Out of the embers, a lawless new empire will rise .
Across the world, the United States recalls troops to combat civil unrest after the biggest economic meltdown in history. Marine Sergeant Ronaldo Salvatore's platoon comes home to a powder keg that could ignite a civil war.
While some see the coming collapse as the end, others see opportunity. Fleeing Naples after rival crime lords decimated his family, Don Antonio Moretti settles in Los Angeles to rebuild his criminal empire. But he is far from alone in his ambitions-the cartel and rival gangs all want the same turf, and they will sacrifice their own soldiers and the blood of innocents to get it.
As open warfare erupts across the states, Salvatore fights his way back to LA, where his son has joined the security officer in the battle for a city spiraling into anarchy. Family is everything, and the Morettis and Salvatores will do what they must to protect their own. But how far will they go to survive in a new economy where the only currency is violence?
