Lost Churches of Mississippi
pdf | 21.37 MB | English | Richard J. Cawthon | 2010 | University Press of Mississippi | Page: 255
About Lost Churches of Mississippi :
Lost Churches of Mississippi is a collection of archival photographs, postcards, and drawings of more than one hundred notable churches and synagogues vanquished by fire, disaster, development, or neglect. Constructed primarily from the mid-1800s through the early 1900s, these places of worship were often among the most visually prominent and architecturally striking buildings in Mississippi. Storms, floods, tornadoes, flames, bulldozers, or the disbandment of congregations razed what once was hallowed.
In Lost Churches of Mississippi, architectural historian Richard J. Cawthon reclaims such noteworthy churches as the old St. Paul's Catholic Church in Vicksburg, Bethel Presbyterian Church near Columbus, the old Trinity Episcopal Church in Pass Christian, and the old First Presbyterian Church in Yazoo City. Selections represent over fifty towns and cities throughout the state and are captured in 180 distinctive black-and-white illustrations from several historical archives and other collections.
Cawthon discusses the architectural features and historical background of each house of worship and provides a brief introduction that illuminates the study of lost buildings, as well as a glossary of architectural terms and an annotated bibliography. Lost Churches of Mississippi rescues a cardinal legacy and recognizes a portion of the state's rich architectural and religious heritage.

The Shadow of What We Were
epub | 330.69 KB | English | Luis Sepulveda | 1900 | Europa | Page: N/A
About The Shadow of What We Were :
Four old friends and comrades in arms, called out of agree to riunite in a warehouse in Santiago, been called together at the behest of the anarchist, Pedro Nolasco, a.k.a. The Shadow, to carry out one last revolutionary gesture before time and age get the better of them. It will be their first meeting since going underground or into exile after Augusto Pinochet's 1973 coup. The men share a past as members of Chile's Socialist Liberation Army and as militant supporters of President Salvador Allende. Scarred by an era of oppression and paranoia, when your beliefs an association could get you killed, they cautiously reconnect. They settle on a date, a location, a secret password. But the night of the meeting only three arrive, and wait in vain. Fate has other plans, more unsettling plans, for their comrad Coco Aravena.
heart troubles, thinning hair, a few pounds too many around the waist; there is little left to connect them with their glorious pasts. Now, however, before...

3G, HSPA and FDD versus TDD Networking Smart Antennas and Adaptive Modulation, 2 Edition
pdf | 4.62 MB | English |978-0470754207 | Lajos L Hanzo, Jonathan Blogh, Song Ni | 2008 | Wiley-IEEE Press; 2 edition | Page: 598
About 3G, HSPA and FDD versus TDD Networking Smart Antennas and Adaptive Modulation, 2 Edition :
3G, HSPA and FDD versus TDD Networking, Second Edition is the only book that contrasts the network capacity gains that may be achieved with the advent of adaptive antenna arrays and HSDPA-style adaptive modulation techniques in the context of FDD and TDD CDMA cellular networks. In the five years since the first edition of this book was published the wireless landscape has evolved further. The new book addresses the recent developments in the field of HSDPA-style wireless networking, focusing particularly on the issues and challenges of FDD versus TDD networking. These solutions are particularly powerful in shadow-faded scenarios, when the antenna array elements experience correlated, rather than independent fading. Furthermore, the flexible up-link/down-link time-slot allocation of TDD is beneficial for supporting the Wireless Internet, but results in erratic interference fluctuations, which is efficiently combated by the antenna arrays and adaptive modulation. Additionally, whilst the adaptive modulation aided system simply drops the instantaneous transmission rate during instances of high interference, conventional networks would drop the call. - Builds on successful previous edition to include recent developments in the field of HSDPA-style wireless networking
- Provides an all-encompassing self-contained overview of the subject for a wide range of readers of all levels.
- Treats the topics of both physical-layer and network-layer aspects of wireless systems using a cross-layer optimization approach.
- One of the first books to contrast in detail both FDD and TDD networking.
The material is presented clearly and logically allowing the uninitiated reader to commence reading it at fundamental non-mathematical conceptual level at the beginning of the book, while advanced readers can turn directly to the required chapter describing solutions to a number of wireless FDD or TDD networking problems. This book will inspire researchers, practicing engineers, operators, marketing engineers and advanced postgraduates.

A History of Telegraphy Its History and Technology
pdf | 3.97 MB | English | Ken Beauchamp | 2001 | Institution of Engineering and Technology | Page: 439
About A History of Telegraphy Its History and Technology :
A dominating theme of the 21st Century will be the transmission and processing of information as the global network of communication channels continues to develop. The emergence of today's digital communications technology owes much to the growth of telegraphy in the 19th and 20th Centuries. The realisation of cheap long-distance communication using telegraphy stimulated the initial design and development of coded transmissions that proved vital in both World Wars for use on land, sea, and in the air. Methods of data compaction, coding and encryption in modern communication systems all have their origins in the techniques used by the telegraph pioneers. In fact the two main phases of telegraph development - cable-based techniques that began in the early 19th Century and wireless transmission in the 20th Century - parallel the changes in voice and information communications seen recently.
History of Telegraphy relates many of the discoveries and the ingenuity of the experimenters and engineers involved in the development of telegraphy, the equipment they designed and built, and the organisation, applications and effects of this technology on society. Part One, Terrestrial Telegraphy, discusses the origins of telegraphy via landlines and submarine cables. Part Two, Aerial Telegraphy, focuses on the development of telegraphy through wireless transmission, using previously unpublished material from the Public Records Office and military sources to examine the role of telegraphy in war. The final chapter examines the successors to telegraphy, including its modern descendant, the global communication network.
The book will be of interest to anyone working in communications and of particular relevance to students, researchers and all those with an interest in the history of technology and communications.

Nature, God and Humanity Envisioning an Ethics of Nature
pdf | 1.1 MB | English | RICHARD L.FERN | 2002 | Page: 285
About Nature, God and Humanity Envisioning an Ethics of Nature :
Nature, God and Humanity clarifies the task of forming an ethics of nature, thereby empowering readers to develop their own critical, faith-based ethics. Calling on original, thought-provoking analyses and arguments, Richard L. Fern frames a philosophical ethics of nature, assesses it scientifically, finds support for it in traditional biblical theism, and situates it culturally. Though defending the moral value of beliefs affirming the radical Otherness of God and human uniqueness, this book aims not to compel the adoption of any particular ethic but rather illumine the contribution diverse forms of inquiry make to an ethics of nature. How does philosophy clarify moral conviction? What does science tell us about nature? Why does religious faith matter? Rejecting the illusion of a single, rationally-compelling ethics, Fern answers these questions in a way that fosters both agreement and disagreement, allowing those holding conflicting ethics of nature to work together for the common good.

Perennial Decay On the Aesthetics and Politics of Decadance
pdf | 18.91 MB | English |978-0812216783 | Constable, Liz; Denisoff, Dennis; Potolsky, Matthew | 1998 | University of Pennsylvania Press | Page: 325
About Perennial Decay On the Aesthetics and Politics of Decadance :
When Oscar Wilde was convicted of gross indecency in 1895, a reporter for the National Observer wrote that there was "not a man or a woman in the English-speaking world possessed of the treasure of a wholesome mind who is not under a deep debt of gratitude to the marquis of Queensberry for destroying the high Priest of the Decadents." But reports of the death of decadence were greatly exaggerated, and today, more than one hundred years after the famous trial and at the beginning of a new millennium, the phenomenon of decadence continues to be a significant cultural force.
Indeed, "decadence" in the nineteenth century, and in our own period, has been a concept whose analysis yields a broad set of associations. In Perennial Decay, Emily Apter, Charles Bernheimer, Sylvia Molloy, Michael Riffaterre, Barbara Spackman, Marc Weiner, and others extend the critical field of decadence beyond the traditional themes of morbidity, the cult of artificiality, exoticism, and sexual nonconformism. They approach the question of decadence afresh, reevaluating the continuing importance of late nineteenth-century decadence for contemporary literary and cultural studies.

The Anointed
epub | 333.44 KB | English | Michael Arditti; | 2019 | Mint Associates Ltd | Page: 286
About The Anointed :
"This is a wonderfully rich novel. Arditti brings Ancient Israel to life." Allan Massie, The Scotsman
Michal is a princess, Abigail a wealthy widow, and Bathsheba a soldier's bride, but as women in Ancient Israel their destiny is the same: to obey their fathers, serve their husbands and raise their children.
Marriage to King David seems to offer them an escape, but behind the trappings of power they discover a deeply conflicted man. The legendary hero who slew Goliath, founded Jerusalem and saved Israel is also a vicious despot who murders his rivals, massacres his captives and menaces his harem.
Michael Arditti's masterly new novel centres on three fascinating, formidable women, whose voices have hitherto been silenced. As they tell of love and betrayal, bang and revenge, motherhood and childlessness, they not only present the time-honoured story in a compelling new light but expose a conflict between male ruthlessness and female resistance, which remains strikingly pertinent today.

The Gentle, Jealous God Reading Euripides' Bacchae in English
pdf | 3.59 MB | English | Perris, Simon; | 2016 | Bloomsbury Academic; 1 edition | Page: 258
About The Gentle, Jealous God Reading Euripides' Bacchae in English :
Euripides' Bacchae is the magnum opus of the ancient world's most popular dramatist and the most modern, perhaps postmodern, of Greek tragedies. Twentieth-century poets and playwrights have often turned their hand to Bacchae, leaving the play with an especially rich and varied translation history. It has also been subjected to several fashions of criticism and interpretation over the years, all reflected in, influencing, and influenced by translation. The Gentle, Jealous God introduces the play and surveys its wider reception; examines a selection of English translations from the early 20th century to the early 21st, setting them in their social, intellectual, and cultural context; and argues, finally, that Dionysus and Bacchae remain potent cultural symbols even now.
Simon Perris presents a fascinating cultural history of one of world theatre's landmark classics. He explores the reception of Dionysus, Bacchae, and the classical ideal in a violent and turmoil-ridden era. And he demonstrates by example that translation matters, or should matter, to readers, writers, actors, directors, students, and scholars of ancient drama.

The helicopters move in, the vibrations send George scurrying for the labyrinth beneath the city where he'll try to find refuge. But will he? He meets people who seem helpful; hacktivists and other rebels looking to help the underground movements of the disgruntled in the city. George soon realizes that the labyrinth is no safe haven and that those who want him dead can follow him anywhere and buy anyone.
Soon, he's running faster than ever, just trying to stay ahead, when he meets a rudimentary robot- a creation of the hacktivists who want to gain an advantage over those in power, those chasing George-named Turing. And thus begins this game whereby George tries to find a way out of this predicament, a way back into society, and yet still try to improve it.
In Turing he sees a possible break in the endless loop of hatred that humankind perpetuates on itself. A robot that will solve all of humanities problems. But is even Turing trustworthy? As the...
