Reprogramming The American Dream by Kevin Scott
epub | 1.92 MB | English | Kevin Scott, Greg Shaw | HarperCollins

About Reprogramming The American Dream by Kevin Scott :

In this essential book written by a rural native and Silicon Valley veteran, Microsoft's Chief technology officer tackles one of the most critical issues facing society today: the future of artificial intelligence and how it can be realistically used to promote growth, even in a shifting employment landscape. There are two prevailing stories about AI: for heartland low- and middle-skill workers, a dystopian tale of steadily increasing job destruction; for urban knowledge workers and the professional class, a utopian tale of enhanced productivity and convenience. But there is a third way to look at this technology that will revolutionize the workplace and ultimately the world. Kevin Scott argues that AI has the potential to create abundance and opportunity for everyone and help solve some of our most vexing problems.
As the chief technology officer at Microsoft, he is deeply involved in the development of AI applications, yet mindful of their potential impact on workers-knowledge he gained firsthand growing up in rural Virginia. Yes, the AI Revolution will radically disrupt economics and employment for everyone for generations to come. But what if leaders prioritized the programming of both future technology and public policy to work together to find solutions ahead of the coming AI epoch? Like public health, the space program, climate change and public education, we need international understanding and collaboration on the future of AI and work. For Scott, the crucial question facing all of us is this: How do we work to ensure that the continued development of AI allo us to keep the American Dream alive?
In this thoughtful, informed guide, he offers a clear roadmap to find the answer.

The Better Half by Sharon Moalem
epub | 9.43 MB | English | Sharon Moalem | Penguin Books Ltd

About The Better Half by Sharon Moalem :

From an award-winning medic and scientist, the game-changing case that genetic females have greater resilience, immunity, endurance and more, compared with males
'A powerful antidote to the myth of a "weaker sex"' Gina Rippon, author of The Gendered BrainFrom birth, genetic females are better at fighting viruses, infections and cancer. They do better at surviving epidemics and famines. They live longer, and even see the world in a wider variety of colours. These are the facts; they are simply stronger than men at every stage of life. Why? And why are we taught the opposite?
Drawing on his wide-ranging experience and cutting-edge research as a medic, geneticist and specialist in rare diseases, Dr Sharon Moalem set out to understand why women are consistently more likely than men to thrive. The answer, he reveals, lies in our genetics: the female's double XX chromosomes offer a powerful survival advantage.
Moalem explains why genetic females outperform males when it comes to immunity, resilience, stamina and much more. And he calls for a long-overdue reconsideration of our male-centric, one-size-fits-all view of the body and of how we prescribe medications - a view that still frames women through the lens of men.
Revolutionary, captivating and utterly persuasive, The Better Half will make you see women, men and the survival of our species anew.

The Book of Anna
epub | 1.54 MB | English | Carmen Boullosa | Coffee House Press

About The Book of Anna :

Russia, 1905. Behind the gates of the Karenin Palace, Sergei, son of Anna Karenina, meets Tolstoy in his dreams and finds reminders of his mother everywhere: the almost-living portrait that the Tsar intends to acquire and the opium-infused manuscripts she wrote just before her death, one of which opens a trapdoor to a wild feminist fairytale. Across the city, Clementine, an anarchist seamstress, and Father Gapón, the charismatic leader of the proletariat, tip the country ever closer to revolution. Boullosa lifts the voices of coachmen, sailors, maids, and seamstresses in this playful, polyphonic, and subversive revision of the Russian revolution, told through the lens of Tolstoy's most beloved work.

Crucible of Hell by Saul David
epub | 33.03 MB | Saul David | Hachette Books

About Crucible of Hell by Saul David :

From the award-winning historian, Saul David, the riveting narrative of the heroic US troops, bonded by the brotherhood and sacrifice of war, who overcame enormous casualties to pull off the toughest invasion of WWII's Pacific Theater -- and the Japanese forces who fought with tragic desperation to stop them.
With Allied forces sweeping across Europe and into Germany in the spring of 1945, one enormous challenge threatened to derail America's audacious drive to win the world back from the Nazis: Japan, the empire that had extended its reach southward across the Pacific and was renowned for the fanaticism and brutality of its fighters, who refused to surrender, even when faced with insurmountable odds. Taking down Japan would require an unrelenting attack to break its national spirit, and launching such an attack on the island empire meant building an operations base just off its shores on the island of Okinawa.
The amphibious operation to capture Okinawa was the largest of the Pacific War and the greatest air-land-sea battle in history, mobilizing 183,000 troops from Seattle, Leyte in the Philippines, and ports around the world. The campaign lasted for 83 blood-soaked days, as the fighting plumbed depths of savagery. One veteran, struggling to make sense of what he had witnessed, referred to the fighting as the "crucible of Hell." Okinawan civilians died in the tens of thousands: some were mistaken for soldiers by American troops; but as the US Marines spearheading the invasion drove further onto the island and Japanese defeat seemed inevitable, many more civilians took their own lives, some even murdering their own families. In just under three months, the world had changed irrevocably: President Franklin D. Roosevelt died; the war in Europe ended; America's appetite for an invasion of Japan had waned, spurring President Truman to use other means -- ultimately atomic bombs -- to end the war; and more than 250,000 servicemen and civilians on or near the island of Okinawa had lost their lives.
Drawing on archival research in the US, Japan, and the UK, and the original accounts of those who survived, Crucible of Hell tells the vivid, heart-rending story of the battle that changed not just the course of WWII, but the course of war, forever.

Saul David is a military historian and broadcaster. Praise for the Sherlock and Lucy Series!
Cosy Christmas reading at its best! This series of Sherlock Holmes retellings is a joy to read and proves a worthy addition to the Holmesian canon. In a word . . . fun!
 dannii.elle.reads (Instagram)
"It might be difficult to imagine the original Holmes even having an offspring  --  much less one he accepts as an investigating partner. Still, the authors make it seem plausible, and for readers who are not purists but rather pleased to see a hint of warmth coming from Holmes, [the Sherlock & Lucy series] is a new way to enjoy Sherlockian mysteries." -- The Santa Barbara Independent
"Elliott (the Twilight of Avon trilogy) and Veley, her father, collaborate on the winning third mystery pairing Sherlock Holmes and his daughter, Lucy James. Readers will look forward to Lucy's further adventures." -- Publishers Weekly  (Remember, Remember: A Sherlock Holmes & Lucy James Mystery, Book 3)
"Fans of Holmesian stories, historical fiction, and Victorian romance will all find something to enjoy in the Sherlock Holmes & Lucy James Mystery Series." -- Critical Blast
**
"[Lucy James is an] independent, strong feminist young woman who is unafraid to take care of herself even in very uncomfortable situations. This fact alone sets [The Sherlock & Lucy series] apart from most Regency historicals or other Sherlock Holmes mysteries. Women are generally damsels in distress, but not Lucy!" -- Tynga's Revie

"I absolutely loved Remember, Remember and think it's the perfect book for Sherlock Holmes fans, as well as mystery lovers. I cannot praise this book and its authors enough for this well written and imaginative story." - The Nerdy Girl Express
**
"Reading this novel was a very delightful way to spend an afternoon. Remember, Remember will not only appeal to fans of Sherlock Holmes, but also to those who love The Secret Life Anna Blanc, The Beekeeper's Apprentice, and A Curious Beginning. - History from a Woman's Perspective
**
"Elliot's writing style is solid and easy to become absorbed in. She gives Lucy a strong narrative voice, which caused the plot to both flow well and pack a punch. Her world building of 1897 London is vivid and skilled, making it a very high point of the novel. She unravels the mystery at a steady pace, showing her talent for creating a storyline that hooks her readers and keeps them wanting more. [...] A very fun story, and an inventive take on some very timeless classics." - The Quirky Book Nerd

The Fatburn Fix by Catherine Shanahan
epub | 8.9 MB | English | Catherine Shanahan, M.D. | Flatiron Books

About The Fatburn Fix by Catherine Shanahan :

In The Fatburn Fix, renowned family physician and LA Lakers Nutrition Director Cate Shanahan, MD proves that the answer to weight gain isn't a "faster" metabolism, more exercise, or even self-control. It all boils down to what Dr. Cate calls the Fatburn Factor, or the body's natural-born ability to burn body fat as fuel.
After years of research and observing the patients in her practice, Dr. Cate discovered that there are certain enzymes required for the body to seek out and utilize body fat for energy. Without these enzymes, people lose the ability to burn fat, making weight gain almost unavoidable. Worse, the loss of your fat-burning enzymes causes your cells to depend on sugar for energy. This leads to elevated blood sugar, putting you at risk for diabetes, and disrupts nearly every hormone in your body.
Now, in The Fatburn Fix, Dr. Cate lays out a step-by-step plan to help reboot your fat burn potential in as little as two weeks, opening the door...

Nerve Adventures in the Science of Fear by Eva Holland
epub | 607.66 KB | English | Eva Holland | 2020 | The Experiment

About Nerve Adventures in the Science of Fear by Eva Holland :

A striking debut work of experiential reportage illuminating what fear does to us and how it's key to both staying and feeling alive
Frozen in terror during a mountain descent, award-winning journalist Eva Holland reaches her breaking point. Since childhood, she's been gripped by two debilitating phobias: fear of losing her mother, and fear of heights. The worst has already happened: Eva's mother died suddenly and unexpectedly in 2015. But now-after an arduous, embarrassing, and tearful finale to her ice-climbing expedition-Eva decides, enough. Fear may define her past, but she won't let it dictate her future.
Thus begins Holland's quest to renegotiate her inhibiting relationship with fear. In stirring, raw prose, she reveals what it's like to live in the clutches of paralyzing dread. And with remarkable courage, she tests the limits of what one can do to live less fearfully-from engaging in daring adventure to cutting-edge research: She confronts her acrophobia by jumping out of an airplane, explores the lives of rare individuals who feel little or no fear, and meets with scientists working to eliminate phobias with a single pill.
Of course, one doesn't have to go out of the way to face fear; by horrible coincidence, a series of freak accidents leaves Holland deeply shaken. Determined to stay the course, she seeks out a surprisingly effective treatment involving eye movement-to reckon with lingering trauma and anxiety to rid herself of intrusive memories and panics while driving.
Ultimately, Holland's odyssey sheds light on universal questions: How do we feel fear, and why? Is fear necessary? Is it rooted in the body or the mind? And it brings her ever closer to knowing: Is there a better way to feel afraid? Finding the nerve to face down her fears, Holland not only sho us how to grapple with our own, but invites us to embrace them as a way to live happier and feel more alive.
