Storyville! An Illustrated Guide to Writing Fiction
epub | 25.63 MB | English | John Dufresne | 2020 | W. W. Norton & Company

Description: A smart and funny guide to writing fiction, with lively infographics to help aspiring writers visualize storytelling techniques.
Whether you are daunted by a blinking cursor or frustrated trying to get the people in your head onto the page, writing stories can be intimidating. It takes passion, tenacity, patience, and a knowledge of-and faith in-the often-digressive writing process. A do-it-yourself manual for the apprentice fiction writer, Storyville! demystifies that process; its bold graphics take you inside the writer's comfortingly chaotic mind and show you how stories are made.
In Storyville!, seasoned guide John Dufresne-whose approach "will anchor the newbie and entertain the veteran" (San Francisco Chronicle)-provides practical insight into the building blocks of fiction, including how to make the reader see your characters, create a suspenseful plot, and revise, revise, revise. With original prompts and exercises...

Tom Wheelwright Tax Free Wealth How to Build Massive Wealth by Permanently Lowering Your Taxes Second Edition
epub | 1.73 MB | English | Tom Wheelwright | 2012 | RDA Press, LLC

Description: After 31 years... Major Tax Reform - and what it means to you True overhaul of the tax law only happens about once every 30 years. In the past 75 years, the U.S. tax law has only seen three major revisions; one in 1954, the next in 1986 and most recently at the end of 2017. I have been fortunate as a tax professional to be heavily involved in the last two reforms. In 1986, I was a manager in the National Tax Department (NTD) of Ernst & Whinney (now Ernst Young). My primary responsibility during my three years there was to create, teach and administer tax courses to the Firm's U.S. tax professionals. Just as I arrived in the summer of 1985, I discovered that much of NTD's resources were being devoted to following the tax reform bill that had been introduced that year. This gave me, as a young tax professional, some amazing insight into the legislative process as well as the horse trading for tax reform. President Reagan wanted two things; simplicity (the 1985 act was call the...

epub | 1.98 MB | English | Stuart MacBride | Harper

Description: Two bloody brilliant short stories from No. 1 bestselling crime writer Stuart MacBride, featuring DS Logan McRae and his boss DI Steel
STRAMASH:
Something fishy is happening on the isle of Jura.
DS Logan McRae gets a phone call from DI Steel ordering him to come to the island at once. One freezing night's sleep in a hatchback and two storm-battered ferries later, Logan arrives - but there's no sign of Steel.
She's lumped him in the middle of a policing nightmare, with bodies, and bullets, and tiny wee boats. And a dangerous hard man who's meant to be dead.
DI STEEL'S BAD HEIR DAY:
Why is DI Steel in an even worse mood than usual?
Is it because it's Christmas? Or maybe it's because the missing persons case she's just caught looks like a hoax from a mile off? Or is it because she's just been left a huge amount of money.?
One thing's for certain: Steel's having a bad day, and she's hell bent on making sure Constable Guthrie has one too.

Stuart MacBride [Logan McRae 02] Dying Light
epub | 420.52 KB | English | 9780007193165 | Stuart MacBride | London : Harper 2007.

Description:
From Publishers Weekly
In this savage, darkly comic second American outing for the newest member of the "Scottish noir" college, the action begins with a particularly gruesome crime: a madman has sealed up a squatter's apartment and set it-and the six people partying inside-afire. That same evening, a prostitute is found beaten to death, and Det. Sgt. Logan MacRae, the ambitious star of Cold Granite (2005), is on the case. But his star has fallen; after a botched raid, MacRae has been demoted to the "Screw-Up Squad," led with a droll lack of enthusiasm by one Inspector Steel. Several characters from Cold Granite reappear, but newcomers won't have any trouble parsing this thriller, though some may be unsettled by the jarring but witty contrast between MacBride's wry tone and the story's brutal violence. The city of Aberdeen figures as one of this well-written novel's main characters, a portrait that will warn readers away from its mean streets. (Aug.)

From
Starred Review In Aberdeen, Scotland, it doesn't just rain, it pours. The climate perfectly suits surly Detective Sergeant Logan Lazarus McRae, recently demoted to the Grampian security officer's "Screw-Up Squad," after a sting operation he was manning left a senior officer dead. Desperately seeking professional redemption, McRae finds himself straddling two grisly cases: the savage murder of a prostitute and a suspicious fire that claimed six lives. Being a detective is grim, often thankless, work, and McRae and his fellow, foulmouthed officers numb themselves with a host of less-than-healthy substances: nicotine, dark ale, bacon sandwiches ("butties"), and greasy chips. There's little rest for McRae, as he navigates a world of sleazy journalists, drug-dealing grandmothers, and slick corporate financiers. But he does manage to slip in time between the sheets with fellow officer Jackie Watson, while trying to steer clear of ex-girlfriend Isobel, a forensic pathologist whose personality is just a few degrees warmer than her specimens in the morgue. Fans of Ian Rankin and Denise Mina will enjoy the mordant MacBride, whose second novel is every bit as dark and riveting as his debut, Cold Granite (2005). Allison Block

Stuart MacBride [Logan McRae 03] Broken Skin

Description: SUMMARY:
CRIME & MYSTERY FICTION. A new Logan McRae thriller. In the pale grey light of a chilly February, Aberdeen is not at its best! There's a rapist prowling the city's cold granite streets, leaving a string of tortured women behind. But while DS Logan McRae's girlfriend is out acting as bait, he's dealing with the blood-drenched body of an unidentified male, dumped outside Accident and Emergency. When a stash of explicit films turns up, all featuring the victim, it looks as if someone in the local bondage community has developed a taste for violent death, and Logan gets dragged into the twilight world of pornographers, sex-shops and S&M. To make matters worse, when they finally arrest the Granite City Rapist, Grampian security officer are forced by the courts to let him go. The Aberdeen Football Club's star striker has an alibi for every attack. Could they really have got it so badly wrong?

Stuart MacBride [Logan McRae 04] Flesh House
epub | 1.04 MB | English | 9780007244560 | Stuart MacBride | London : Haper Collins, 2008.

Description:
From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Not for the faint of heart or weak of stomach, MacBride's superbly unsettling fourth novel (after Bloodshot) sets Det. Sgt. Logan McRae on the trail of a serial killer in Aberdeen, Scotland. When human remains are discovered first in a shipping container and later in a local butcher shop, McRae's superiors send him to round up Kenneth Wiseman (aka the Flesher), who terrorized the city 20 years earlier but was released on a technicality. Det. Insp. David Insch, who was part of the original Wiseman investigation, is determined to see the man behind bars. But when tragedy strikes, leaving Insch teetering on the edge of throwing away his entire career, McRae realizes that the security officer have been looking in the wrong direction. As more body parts turn up, McRae must fit the grisly pieces together before time runs out. MacBride's dry wit turns what could have been a gratuitously gory slasher story into a crackling thriller. From
Starred Review Apparently, rain and dark skies are what's needed to cultivate crime writers: Scotland has a bumper crop, with growing talents such as MacBride joining veterans like Ian Rankin and Denise Mina in a fertile field. In MacBride's fourth and most ambitious effort, Aberdeen's Detective Sergeant Logan McRae and cohorts are trying to catch a serial killer. "The Flesher" wears a Margaret Thatcher mask and a butcher's apron and has a butcher's skill with blades: the victims are professionally bled, skinned, and sectioned. But the butchery doesn't stop there: vacuum-packed pieces of human meat are turning up in shops. The good ne is that the security officer think they know who the Flesher is. The bad ne is that they don't know where he is. McRae and his cranky crew-the hypertensive Insch, the icy McAllister, the unsentimental Steel-work together with the ease of a veteran cast, and MacBride adds a couple of new faces, including a BBC cameraman who's filming the investigation, to keep the chemistry fresh. MacBride may have hit his stride in book one, but here he breaks into a run. The push-pull of tensions from within and without exacerbates a seemingly unsolvable case whose horrors take on staggering dimensions. But though the blood, booze, and rain do pour, persistent black humor sweetens the potion. With weather like that, you'd have to be able to laugh at just about anything. --Keir Graff

Stuart MacBride [Logan McRae 05] Blind Eye
epub | 487.75 KB | English | 9780007244577 | Stuart MacBride | HarperCollins Publishers Ltd

Description:
From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Det. Sgt. Logan McRae, who's still recovering from the bloody events of 2008's Flesh, investigates a series of brutal attacks on Polish immigrants in MacBride's excellent fifth novel to feature the Aberdeen, Scotland, cop. A local xenophobe, bitter about the influx of Polish workers, appears to be the culprit, but when one of the city's local crime bosses is assaulted, McRae begins to wonder if the violence is the result of a brewing turf war between Scottish crime figures and encroaching Eastern European thugs. Meanwhile, McRae and foul-mouthed Det. Insp. Roberta Steele are stuck babysitting Rory Simpson, a pedophile who becomes an inadvertent-but key-witness. MacBride's liberal use of humor, especially in the often slapstick rapport between McRae and the crusty Steel, never detracts from the action. A lesser writer would have fumbled such a complexly layered plot, but MacBride is in his element the more dark and twisted the story-and characters-become. (Oct.)

An American Sickness How Healthcare Became Big Business and How You Can Take It Back
epub | 757.86 KB | English | Elisabeth Rosenthal | Penguin Publishing Group

Description: At a moment of drastic political upheaval, a shocking investigation into the dangerous, expensive, and dysfunctional American healthcare system, as well as solutions to its myriad of problems

In these troubled times, perhaps no institution has unraveled more quickly and more completely than American medicine. In only a few decades, the medical system has been overrun by organizations seeking to exploit for profit the trust that vulnerable and sick Americans place in their healthcare. Our politicians have proven themselves either unwilling or incapable of reining in the increasingly outrageous costs faced by patients, and market-based solutions only seem to funnel larger and larger sums of our money into the hands of corporations. Impossibly high insurance premiums and inexplicably large bills have become facts of life; fatalism has set in. Very quickly Americans have been made to accept paying more for less. How did things get so bad so fast?

Description: A gleefully gruesome look at the actual science behind the most outlandish, cartoonish, and impossible deaths you can imagine

What would happen if you took a swim outside a deep-sea submarine wearing only a swimsuit? How long could you last if you stood on the surface of the sun? How far could you actually get in digging a hole to China? Paul Doherty, senior staff scientist at San Francisco's famed Exploratorium Museum, and writer Cody Cassidy explore the real science behind these and other fantastical scenarios, offering insights into physics, astronomy, anatomy, and more along the way.
Is slipping on a banana peel really as hazardous to your health as the cartoons imply? Answer: Yes. Banana peels ooze a gel that turns out to be extremely slippery. Your foot and body weight provide the pressure. The gel provides the humor (and resulting head trauma).

Athelstan The Making of England
epub | 23.32 MB | English | Tom Holland | Penguin Books Ltd

Description: The formation of England occurred against the odds: an island divided into rival kingdoms, under savage assault from Viking hordes. But, after King Alfred ensured the survival of Wessex and his son Edward expanded it, his grandson Athelstan inherited the rule of both Mercia and Wessex, conquered Northumbria and was hailed as Rex totius Britanniae: 'King of the whole of Britain'.
Tom Holland recounts this extraordinary story with relish and drama, transporting us back to a time of omens, raven harbingers and blood-red battlefields. As well as giving form to the figure of Athelstan - devout, shrewd, all too aware of the precarious nature of his power, especially in the north - he introduces the great figures of the age, including Alfred and his daughter Aethelflaed, 'Lady of the Mercians', who brought Athelstan up at the Mercian court. Making sense of the family rivalries and fractious conflicts of the Anglo-Saxon rulers, Holland sho us how a royal dynasty...

Gene Logsdon Holy Shit Managing Manure to Save Mankind
epub | 865 KB | Gene Logsdon | Chelsea Green Publishing

Description: In his insightful new book, Holy Shit: Managing Manure to Save Mankind, contrary farmer Gene Logsdon provides the inside story of manure-our greatest, yet most misunderstood, natural resource. He begins by lamenting a modern society that not only thro away both animal and human manure-worth billions of dollars in fertilizer value-but that spends a staggering amount of money to do so. This wastefulness makes even less sense as the supply of mined or chemically synthesized fertilizers dwindles and their cost skyrockets. In fact, he argues, if we do not learn how to turn our manures into fertilizer to keep food production in line with increasing population, our civilization, like so many that went before it, will inevitably decline. With his trademark humor, his years of experience writing about both farming and waste management, and his uncanny eye for the small but important details, Logsdon artfully describes how to manage farm manure, pet manure and human manure to...

This Searing Light, the Sun and Everything Else by Jon Savage
epub | 4.34 MB | English | Jon Savage | 2019 | Faber & Faber

Description: Joy Division emerged in the mid-70s at the start of a two-decades long Manchester scene that was to become much mythologised. It was then a city still labouring in the wake of the war and entering a phase of huge social and physical change, and something of this spirit made its way into the DNA of the band. Over the course of two albums, a handful of other seminal releases, and some legendary gigs, Joy Division became the most successful and exciting underground band of their generation. Then, on the brink of a tour to America, Ian Curtis took his own life.
In This searing light, the sun and everything else, Jon Savage has assembled three decades worth of intervie with the principle players in the Joy Division story: Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris, Deborah Curtis, Peter Saville, Tony Wilson, Paul Morley, Alan Hempsall, Lesley Gilbert, Terry Mason, Anik Honore, and many more. It is the story of how a band resurrected a city, how they came together in...
