The April Rainers - Anthea Fraser

Descirption: Death by strangulation is not a pretty sight, but then Ted Baxter, who had driven his wife to suicide, was an ugly character.
His wastebasket bulges with hate mail.
One letter - inscribed in copperplate letters with striking green ink - stands out: You have been found guilty of crimes against humanity. The death sentence will be carried out in eight days. Signed: The April Rainers.
Chief Inspector Webb of the Shillingham CID soon discerns a pattern.
Baxter was not the April Rainers' first victim.
The two other known victims were an extortionist and a hostile-takeover artist; both had so many enemies that another threat seemed insignificant - even one inscribed in copperplate letters.
What connects the victims?
Who are the April Rainers?
Why are they warning their victims beforehand?
In his most baffling case yet, Chief Inspector Webb must find out who this group is and why its members are taking the law into their own hands .

The next morning, there is nothing left but the pimp's charred body and the woman's footprints in the snow.As his forensics specialists turn their attention to the burned corpse, security officer Inspector Celcius Daly obsesses over the footprints. Descirption: Actress Jessica Randal has been incapacitated by a broken leg, and both she and her husband of eight weeks, author Matthew Selby, think they will have a month of tranquility and convalescence when they rent Hinckley cottage near the rustic English village of Westridge. But a demented rapist is stalking the town, striking quickly, savagely and often, and always adding his own macabre touch to the act by forcing his terrified victims to recite nursery rhymes. When the body of Freda Cowley, missing owner of Hinckley cottage, is discovered with a nursery rhyme tucked into her pocket, it becomes apparent that the rapist is also a murderer, and the community, populated with well-meaning, sharp-eyed and astute citizens, dra together for support and protection and tries to make sure that Jessica, housebound and helpless, has someone with her when Matthew is out of town. Jessica is indeed at risk, for several bizarre incidents have drawn suspicion to her husband, and clues suggest she is next on the murderer's list. Fraser (A Shroud for Delilah has added a distracting and meaningless romantic subplot, but the book remains, till the end, a taut and truly shocking story

Descirption: A bizarre road accident propels Celcius Daly into an investigation that will reveal the truth about his mother's death thirty years ago.
Father Aloysius Walsh spent the last years of his life painstakingly collecting evidence of murder: a year-long killing spree of unparalleled savagery that blighted Ireland's borderlands at the end of the 1970s. Pinned to his bedroom wall, a macabre map charts the grim territory of death: victims, weapons, wounds, dates - and somehow, amid the forest of pins and notes, he had discerned a pattern...
So why did Father Walsh deliberately drive through a cordon of security officermen and off the road to his death? Why, when Inspector Celcius Daly arrives at the scene, does he find Special Branch already there? And why is his mother's name on the priest's map?
The past poisons the present and Daly's life will never be the same again.

When the body of Carol Dexter, who has just moved from London, is found floating in a pond, Webb can't help but note that her door was also marked by this strange symbol.

From Kirkus Revie
Helen Campbell's marriage to Andrew, an insurance claims adjuster is in trouble. Their two children are grown, and a restless Helen is thinking of renewing her old career in the antiques trade. Driving home one night from a visit to daughter Penelope, a university student, Helen is delayed by heavy fog and thankfully takes a room at The Seven Stars, a B&B along the way. As she's parking her car, a young woman runs out of the inn's doorway. Her body is found later that night--victim of a hit and run. Meanwhile, Chief Inspector David Webb of the nearby Shillingham security officer (The Gospel Makers, 1996, etc.) is trying to dredge up information from a botched attempt to break into Beckworth House- -one of a series of robberies of stately homes across the county, all of them marked by the theft of one or only a few not-always- valuable objects. Some days later Helen returns to Steeple Bayliss to take a two-week course on antiques, staying again at The Seven Stars, where, as on her first stay, she detects some odd cross- currents amongst owners Stella and Gordon Cain, Stella's sister Kate and brother-in-law Nicholas Warren; disquieting things, too, about their visitor Dominic Hardy--disturbing enough to drive Helen to the local security officer station, where, eventually, her total recall helps Webb solve a case in which the latest break-in has resulted in murder. Readable and fitfully intriguing, but undermined by too many coincidences, a clumsily absurd conspiracy, and an underlying motive literally not to be believed. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. Descirption: When Sheila Fairchild wakes one night from a chilling nightmare, it brings back painful memories of the nightmares she suffered as a child.
The following day, a prominent local landowner Billy Makepeace is found dead in the canal.
It soon emerges that his death is anything but innocent, but when Sheila's brother DCI Webb is assigned to the case, he has every reason for not wanting to get involved.
Makepeace was an old rival of his father's and it seems inevitable the investigation will stir up painful memories of an early life he had hoped to put behind him.
But many questions still need to be answered.
Why did Billy Makepeace telephone Sheila on the night he died? Especially when the two families, because of the old feud, never spoke.
Why should Makepeace also have telephoned the local vicar?
And whatever became of the third rival, Dick Vernon, who disappeared without a trace decades ago?
When it emerges that Sheila's nightmares may have their origins in a dreadful truth, it seems that DCI Webb may have to solve two murders instead of just one.
In doing so, he may just find out the real reasons why there were three, three the rivals.
'Three, Three, The Rivals' is another absorbing detective mystery from Anthea Fraser in the DCI Webb series.

Descirption: Palace intrigues, the death of one-time royal favorites . . . it may sound like Tudor England, but it's Egypt during the 18th Dynasty, about 1350 B.C. Akhenaten, the ?reformist? pharaoh, has died, and his successor, the child pharaoh Tutankhamun, is effectively controlled by political schemers with no love for Akhenaten's old supporters, now deemed heretics. Many of these have lost their lives, but Huy, once a scribe in Akhenaten's court, is luckier: He's lost merely his home and the right to practice his trade. In desperation, Huy becomes a sort of traveling troubleshooter, the world's first private eye. City of the Horizon marks his first case, bringing him up against both Egypt's powerful priesthood and a brutal gang of tomb-robbers, all while he's trying to evade the clutches of the secret security officer. The modern world, it seems, has no monopoly on duplicity and corruption.
