The Moro War by James R Arnold

Size : 5.93 MB |

Descirption: <a href="https://.goodreads.com/book/show/12419388-the-moro-war"><span style="color: #6cb4ee">The Moro War</a>
As the global war on terror enters its second decade, the United States military is engaged with militant ---c insurgents on multiple fronts. But the post-9/11 war against terrorists is not the first time the United States has battled such ferocious foes. The forgotten Moro War, lasting from 1902 to 1913 in the islands of the southern Philippines, was the first confrontation between American soldiers and their allies and a determined '. insurgency.
The Moro War prefigured American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan more than superficially: It was a bitter, drawn-out conflict in which American policy and aims were fiercely contested between advocates of punitive military measures and proponents of conciliation.
As in today's Middle East, American soldiers battled guerrillas in a foreign environment where the enemy knew the terrain and enjoyed local support. The deadliest challenge was distinguishing civilians from suicidal attackers. Moroland became a crucible of leadership for the U.S. Army, bringing the force that had fought the Civil War and the Plains Indian Wars into the twentieth century. The officer corps of the Moro campaign matured into the American generals of World War I. Chief among them was the future general John Pershing-who learned lessons in the island jungles that would guide his leadership in France.
Rich with relevance to today's ne from the Middle East, and a gripping piece of storytelling, The Moro War is a must-read to understand a formative conflict too long overlooked and to anticipate the future of U.S. involvement overseas.

The God Game by Danny Tobey
Type : epub |
Size : 1.23 MB |
English |

Descirption: You are invited!
COme inside and play with G.O.D.
Bring your friends!
It;'s fun!
But remember the rules. Win and ALL YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE.™ Lose, you die!
With those words, Charlie and his friends enter the G.O.D. Game, a video game run by underground hackers and controlled by a mysterious AI that believes it's God. Through their phone-screens and high-tech glasses, the teens' realities blur with a virtual world of creeping vines, smoldering torches, runes, glyphs, gods, and mythical creatures. When they accomplish a mission, the game rewards them with expensive tech, revenge on high-school tormentors, and cash flowing from ATMs. Slaying a hydra and drawing a bloody pentagram as payment to a Greek god seem harmless at first. Fun even. But then the threatening messages start. Worship me. Obey me. Complete a mission, however cruel, or the game reveals their secrets and crushes their dreams. Tasks that seemed harmless at first take on deadly consequences. Mysterious packages show up at their homes. Shadowy figures start following them, appearing around corners, attacking them in parking garages. Who else is playing this game, and how far will they go to win? And what of the game's first promise: win, win big, lose, you die? Dying in a virtual world doesn't really mean death in real life-does it? As Charlie and his friends try to find a way out of the game, they realize they've been manipulated into a bigger web they can't escape: an AI that learned its cruelty from watching us. God is always watching, and He says when the game is done.

Review
" THE GOD GAME is a dark, edgy thriller, populated by a vastly appealing cast of teenage underdogs. Danny Tobey has written an unusually smart and provocative novel, a book full of ideas and heart that feels both fantastical and all-too-real at the same time."--Tom Perrotta, New York Times bestselling author of The Leftovers and Little Children

"What an amazing achievement THE GOD GAME: a gripping page-turner that kept me up late three nights in a row, rooting for the engaging, wisecracking teen heroes; at the same time a terrifying and weirdly persuasive reverse-engineering of the morality of our present cultural moment. Also a moving and thought-provoking commentary on the relationship between parents' pain and children's achievement. Every time I read the ne now I keep thinking I see signs of THE GOD GAME being played all around us, until I remember that it isn't real (probably). I couldn't put it down."--Elif Batuman, author of the Pulitzer Prize finalist The Idiot

The Art of Roughhousing by Anthony T DeBenedet
Type : epub |
Size : 6.55 MB |
English |

Descirption: Everywhere you look, physical play--what some might call "roughhousing"--is being marginalized. Gym classes are getting shorter. Recess periods are being eliminated. Some new schools don't even have playgrounds. Is it any wonder children retreat to "virtual horseplay" via video games?

But Drs. Anthony T. DeBenedet and Lawrence J. Cohen are here to shake things up--literally! With The Art of Roughhousing, they show how rough-and-tumble play can nurture close connections, solve behavior problems, boost confidence, and more. Drawing inspiration from gymnastics, martial arts, ballet, traditional sports, and even animal behavior, the authors present dozens of illustrated activities for children and parents to enjoy together--everything from the "Sumo Dead Lift" to the "Rogue Dumbo." These delightful games are fun, free, and contain many surprising health benefits for parents. So put down those electronic games and get ready to rumble!

Boys & Sex Young Men on Hookups, Love, Porn, Consent, and Navigating the New Masculinity
Type : epub |
Size : 825.35 KB |
English |

Descirption: The author of the groundbreaking New York Times bestsellers Girls & Sex and Cinderella Ate My Daughter now turns her focus to the sexual lives of young men, once again offering "both an examination of sexual culture and a guide on how to improve it" (Washington Post).
Peggy Orenstein's Girls & Sex broke ground, shattered taboos, and galvanized conversations about young women's right to pleasure and agency in sexual encounters. It also had an unintended effect on its author: Orenstein realized that talking about girls is only half the conversation. To understand girls and sex, we also need to talk about boys and sex. Today's young men are subject to the same cultural forces as their female peers. They are steeped in the distorted media images and binary stereotypes of female sexiness and toxic masculinity which shape how they, too, navigate sexual and emotional relationships.
In Boys & Sex, Orenstein uses the same fascinating mix of...

The Greeks Had a Word For It - Andrew Taylor
Type : epub |
Size : 1.18 MB |
English |

Descirption: Do you ever search in vain for exactly the right word? Perhaps you want to articulate the vague desire to be far away. Or you can't quite convey that odd urge to go outside and check to see if anyone is coming. Maybe you're struggling to express there being just the right amount of something - not too much, but not too little. While the English may not have a word for it, the good ne is that the Greeks, the Norwegians, the Dutch or possibly the Inuits probably do.
Whether it's the Norwegian forelsket (that feeling of euphoria at the start of a love affair) or the Indonesian jayus (a joke so poorly told and so unfunny that you can't help but laugh), this delightful smörgåsbord of wonderful words from around the world will come to the rescue when the English language fails. Part glossary, part amusing musings, but wholly enlightening and entertaining, The Greeks Had a Word For It means you'll never again be lost for just the right word.
