Descirption: Murders happen every day in the big bad city. They're not such a big deal, you know. Even when the victim is a city councilman as well known as Lester Henderson. But this is the first time Fat Ollie Weeks of the 88th Precinct has written a novel, ah yes. Called Report to the Commissioner, it follo a cunning detective named Olivia Wesley Watts, who, apart from being female and slim, is rather like Fat Ollie himself. While Ollie's responding to the squeal about the dead councilman, his leather dispatch case is stolen from the back of his car -- and in it, the only copy of his precious manuscript. Joined by Carella and Kling from the neighboring 87th Precinct, Ollie investigates the homicide with all the exquisite crudeness, insensitivity, and determination for which he is famous. But the theft of his first novel fills Ollie with a renewed passion for old-fashioned detective work. Following the exploits of one of Ed McBain's most beloved detectives, this lively and...

Descirption: It should have been the night that launched a new pop idol. Tamar Valparaiso is young and beautiful, with the body and voice of an angel, and the stage is set for her to launch her debut album, Bandersnatch, on a luxury yacht in the heart of the city. But halfway through her performance, while the partygoers look on helplessly, masked men drag Tamar off the stage and into a waiting speedboat. Detective Steve Carella is just showing up for the graveyard shift when ne of the kidnapping comes in. Working disjointedly with a Joint Task Force that calls itself "The Squad," Carella and the men and women of the Eight-Seven must find Tamar before time -- or indeed her very life -- runs out. In this brilliant look at the music industry, Ed McBain once again combines his mastery of the form with the fast-paced dialogue and intricate plotting that have become his signature.

Descirption: Ed McBain concocts a brilliant and intricate thriller about a master criminal who haunts the city with cryptic passages from Shakespeare, directing the detectives of the 87th Precinct to a future crime -- if only they can figure out what he means. The 87th Precinct gets a visit from one of the city's most accomplished criminals -- a thief known as the Deaf Man. Because he might be deaf. Or he might not. So little is known about the man who is harassing Detective Steve Carella with puzzling messages that it is hard to tell. But as soon as a pattern emerges, the detectives of the 87th are forced to hit the books and brush up on their Shakespeare -- because each new clue contains a line from one of his works. Unless they can crack the complicated riddles and beat the Deaf Man at his own cat-and-mouse game, someone is going to end up hurt, or something will be stolen -- or both. It's always so hard to tell with the Deaf Man. Ed McBain brings his most intelligent and devious...

The real New York City, not the mythical Isola of McBain's popular 87th Precinct series, plays a lead in his devastating new thriller. Uptown Manhattan is where Olivia Kidd forces her brother Sarge to sell his beloved collection of paintings as ordered by their father, a Texas trillionaire. Downtown, Detective Reardon seeks for clues to the gunmen who have shot Ralph D'Annunzio dead in his restaurant. Robberty isn't the motive; there seems to be none nor can Reardon make a connection between D'Annunzio and a second murder victim, a lawyer killed after leaving a stock broker's office. By diligently investigating the dead men's last days, however, the detective begins to put together bits of a puzzle with appalling implications. The murders and other crimes form a graphic picture in Reardon's mind of a great metropolis ravaged by people beyond the law's long arm. These malefactors order killings to silence anyone who might accidentally hear about their deals for vast profits swelling already uncountable fortunes. McBain's practiced skills rivet one to the story of human vultures and their prey.

From Kirkus Revie
McBain lays off the 87th Precinct for a zany Christmas adventure that takes off like a nuclear-powered roller coaster: hick Florida orange-grower Michael Barnes, looking to catch the last plane out of Manhattan after a business trip, gets hustled by a pair of sharpies, then, minus his driver's license, turns his car over to a movie producer who ditches him and drives it away, and then, leaving the security officer station where he's reported his bad luck, gets held up by a masked Chinese gunman who leads him, when they're both chased by a security officer officer in lingerie (don't ask), to a high-stakes crapshoot. Just when you're figuring this for a remake of The Out-of-Towners and Blind Date (two of the few movies McBain doesn't refer to directly sooner or later), Michael hears that the movie producer's been found dead in Michael's rented car, along with Michael's wallet and ID- -except, as Michael and gorgeous chauffeur Connie Kee find out, it isn't really the movie producer at all, but the little man in a humongous drug-ring they'd better look into if they're going to keep Michael (instantly famous from the late-night TV ne) out of stir. Ramshackle plotting toward the end, as usual with recent McBains, but still slick and professionally funny--a real grabber. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Descirption: America's greatest writer of security officer novels tells a shocking story of innocence and guilt, of lives shattered. As sixteen-year-old Rebecca Patton takes an apparently ordinary driving lesson, tragedy strikes when she runs down and kills a woman who has just stepped off a curb. When detective Katie Logan appears on the scene, she discovers that the driving instructor, Andrew Newell, is behaving incoherently and appears to be drunk. The apparent negligent homicide certainly warrants an arrest. But when the victim's handbag is retrieved, and the woman is identified as Newell's wife, Logan fears that something far more sinister may have occurred. Praise for Ed McBain: "He is, by far, the best at what he does. Case closed." - People; "A master." - Time; "The author delivers the goods: wired action scenes, dialogue that breathes, characters with heart and characters who eat those hearts, and glints of unforgiving humor.... McBain owns his turf." - New York Times Book Review; "The best crime writer in the business." - Houston Post.
Amazon.com Review
Ed McBain--author of the immensely popular 87th Precinct crime series--packs his plots with the kick of a .44. Driving Lessons--his entry in the Sounds Like Murder collection of original crime stories--is no exception. Written exclusively for audio production, it's a twisting tale of murder, deceit, and love gone bad that opens with an accident. One crisp autumn day, a woman steps off the curb in front of a student driver. It's the last mistake she ever makes. "She lay in the gutter some twenty feet from where a highway patrol car was just pulling in behind the Ford. Red coat open over a blue skirt and jacket. White blouse with a stock tie. Eyes closed. Hands at her sides, palms upward, fingers twitching." You might chalk it up to inexperience, just one more tragic blunder. But when a local detective starts digging she uncovers some troubling clues.
Tony Award-winning Broadway actress Barbara Rosenblat gives an impressive performance, switching between character voices and straight narration convincingly, while moving the action forward without striving. "Driving Lessons" is a short and not-so-sweet treat by one of the master craftsmen working the crime story beat. (Running time: two hours, one cassette) --George Laney
From Publishers Weekly
When 16-year-old student driver Rebecca Patton hits a woman who steps off the curb into her path one afternoon in the town of River Close, Rebecca's driving instructor, Andrew Newell, is in big trouble. Though Newell passes a Breathalyzer test, he can barely stand on his feet and doesn't know his nameAhe's obviously high on something. So begins this riveting novella from one of America's finest crime writers. When the security officer question Newell, he denies taking any drugs and demands to see a lawyer. Will the authorities be able to test him for drugs before the evidence leaves his bloodstream? Meanwhile, the victim lies unidentified in critical condition at the local hospital. Then a witness returns to the accident scene and finds the woman's purse hanging in a tree. Just as the security officer learn from the victim's driver's license that she's Mary Beth Newell, the driving instructor's wife, word comes from the hospital that she's dead. McBain takes a fairly simple scenarioAwhat appears to be a case of vehicular manslaughterAand develops it into a complex tale of human frailty, with nary a wasted word. Detective Katie Logan later discovers that Mary Beth had just left the Roman Catholic church on the street where the car struck her. Father McDowell won't betray the confidences of the confessional, but his inadvertant admission that Mary Beth had problems is enough to put Logan on the guilty party's trail. The truth is as shocking as it is unexpected. (Sept.)

The 25 crime stories the late MWA Grand Master (1926-2005) wrote between 1952 and 1957 and selected for this thematically arranged collection display in embryo the style and techniques that he would later hone into perhaps the finest security officer procedural series of all time: the 87th Precinct. Born Salvatore Lombino, McBain (Fiddlers) changed his name legally to Evan Hunter, one of three names these early stories were published under in magazines like Manhunt and Argosy. McBain's entertaining general introduction points to the wide range of his subject matter: "Here were the kids in trouble and the women in jeopardy, here were the private eyes and the gangs. Here were the loose cannons and the innocent bystanders. And here, too, were the cops and robbers." Equally illuminating are his introductions to individual tales like "See Him Die," which, greatly expanded, became the 13th book in the 87th Precinct series. This is an essential volume for McBain fans, an inspiration for aspiring authors and a treasure for both. (July)

From Booklist
McBain oversaw the compilation of this anthology of his early crime fiction before his death in 2005. Long before McBain was the McBain of the 87th Precinct series and the winner of the Mystery Writers of America's Grand Master Award and the British Crime Writers' Diamond Dagger Award, he wrote short fiction, paid by the word, for 1950s pulp magazines such as Manhunt and Argosy under the names of Richard Marsten, Hunt Collins, and Evan Hunter. This collection presents 25 of those crime stories, published between 1952 and 1957 (none of his science fiction, adventure, or western stories are republished here). Grouped thematically under such headings as "Women in Jeopardy," "Private Eyes," and "Cops and Robbers," the stories are definitely of the period, long on hard-boiled tone, short on subtlety. More interesting than the stories themselves are McBain's general introduction, which presents both comic details about his career and valuable insights into his writing, and the short prefaces he gives each section, which provide a window into the times and his own development as a writer. For McBain fans. Connie Fletcher

"The Resurrection Man" by Sharyn McCrumb: During America's first century, doctors used any means necessary to advance their craft-including dissecting corpses. This time around Matthew Hope finds himself in southern Florida and in a mess. A woman he's representing is suing a toy manufacturer she says stole her idea. The problem is, the president of the toy company was murdered, and guess who's the prime suspect? The other problem--or problems--is that Hope's primary private investigator winds up on a boat kidnapped by drug runners leaving Hope, who is still smarting from gunshot wounds he collected in other adventures, to contact by himself the subjects for the investigation, all of whom reside on boats. Got that? He does get some help, in the form of an old-college PI named Guthrie Lamb, who thro in his techniques to try to crack this rather nutty case.
From Publishers Weekly
Hero/narrator Matthew Hope, recovered from gunshots and a coma (There Was a Little Girl, 1994) and, true to his earlier resolve, practicing only civil law in (fictional) Calusa, Fla., represents the plaintiff in a suit involving the eponymous teddy bear, named after a mis-heard line in a hymn ("Gladly the cross I'd bear"). Young toy designer Lainie Commins is suing her ex-boss, toy manufacturer Brett Toland, for copyright and patent infringement, contending that his cross-eyed bear is a direct steal from hers. When Brett is found shot to death on his yacht, Lainie is arrested and charged with murder. She persuades Hope to represent her even as, we later learn, she commits the first legal sin, lying to her lawyer. From mansions to shacks and yacht club to sleazy venues for lingerie "models," McBain gives us a tour of Gulf Coast Florida that's seldom grand. Unable to reach his usual investigators (the main subplot has PI Warren Chambers urging his colleague Toots Kiley to kick her crack cocaine habit cold turkey), Hope hires 60-something Guthrie Lamb, an old-style PI with major male chauvinist traits. McBain, as he has for more than 40 years, keeps his readers riveted through this entire, satisfying tale.

"One of the creepiest settings I've ever experienced.DARLING is deeply unsettling, in your face horror."
-Nate Kenyon, Award-winning author of SPARROW ROCK and DIABLO: THE ORDER
"Hodson delivers with passion and intensity."
-Scott Nicholson, LIQUID FEAR and THE RED CHURCH
"Have you had the pleasure of meeting Brad C. Hodson's work yet? His short stories in HORROR FOR GOOD and John Skipp's WEREWOLVES anthology were amazing, and now here comes his first novel, DARLING. We should all hate him. Buy the books and read them first.then hate him."
-Lisa Morton, Bram Stoker Award winning author of CASTLE OF LOS ANGELES and THE HALLOWEEN ENCYCLOPEDIA
"You know that feeling you get as the Bigwheel clicks slowly down the hall? Something awful is waiting just around the corner and your skin crawls with dread because you're too scared to look away. Well, Brad Hodson kno how to scare you like that. Weird and unsettling, but hauntingly perceptive, Hodson's DARLING is a rare accomplishment, a finely-honed study in mounting tension that keeps readers turning pages despite their fear. This is how you do it, folks. Hodson kno how to deliver the scares, and he's got a nightmare just for you."
-Joe McKinney, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of FLESH EATERS and DEAD CITY
"Intense and atmospheric, my favorite qualities in a haunted house novel. This is a pure horror novel with interesting characters and a slightly self-aware approach to the material. It accomplishes everything it wants to accomplish and then some. I was a follower of Hodson's writing before, but now I'll be a devout follower."
-Benjamin Kane Ethridge, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of BLACK & ORANGE and BOTTLED ABYSS
"DARLING was a great read. It had all the elements I enjoy in a horror novel and Hodson has succeeded where many fail in that he's managed to actually make it creepy. Like comedy, creepy (real creepy) is harder than it looks, but DARLING raised the small hairs on my arms a few times. Brad has a knack to unnerve and I'm officially a Hodson fan. I eagerly await his next book. Excellent debut."
-Michael Louis Calvillo, acclaimed author of I WILL RISE, AS FATE WOULD HAVE IT, and LAMBS
"Bong, bong, bong.
Quasimodo, does that ring a bell?
Of course!
How about Brad Hodson, does that ring a bell?
Hmmm.maybe, not sure.
Uh-huh, well check out my enthusiastic reaction to DARLING. The straight forward, reader accessible prose, with no downfield literary juking reminds me a lot of Richard Laymon. Simple, right? Uh-uh, don't be fooled. Accomplished always looks easy. Hodson gets his simple effects by using precise language, including always picking the exact verb not the first serviceable, which eliminates the need for lots of adjectives and adverbs. His fast-paced plotting with no fluff makes for an engaging and compelling story arc, with great closure, perfect last line. Snag a copy of DARLING on my recommendation, read it, and then:
Bong, bong, bong
Brad Hodson, does that ring a bell?
You bet your sweet ass!"
