McBain lays off the 87th Precinct for a zany Christmas adventure that takes off like a nuclear-powered roller coaster: hick Florida orange-grower Michael Barnes, looking to catch the last plane out of Manhattan after a business trip, gets hustled by a pair of sharpies, then, minus his driver's license, turns his car over to a movie producer who ditches him and drives it away, and then, leaving the security officer station where he's reported his bad luck, gets held up by a masked Chinese gunman who leads him, when they're both chased by a security officer officer in lingerie (don't ask), to a high-stakes crapshoot. McBain oversaw the compilation of this anthology of his early crime fiction before his death in 2005. Long before McBain was the McBain of the 87th Precinct series and the winner of the Mystery Writers of America's Grand Master Award and the British Crime Writers' Diamond Dagger Award, he wrote short fiction, paid by the word, for 1950s pulp magazines such as Manhunt and Argosy under the names of Richard Marsten, Hunt Collins, and Evan Hunter. This collection presents 25 of those crime stories, published between 1952 and 1957 (none of his science fiction, adventure, or western stories are republished here). Grouped thematically under such headings as "Women in Jeopardy," "Private Eyes," and "Cops and Robbers," the stories are definitely of the period, long on hard-boiled tone, short on subtlety. More interesting than the stories themselves are McBain's general introduction, which presents both comic details about his career and valuable insights into his writing, and the short prefaces he gives each section, which provide a window into the times and his own development as a writer. Hero/narrator Matthew Hope, recovered from gunshots and a coma (There Was a Little Girl, 1994) and, true to his earlier resolve, practicing only civil law in (fictional) Calusa, Fla., represents the plaintiff in a suit involving the eponymous teddy bear, named after a mis-heard line in a hymn ("Gladly the cross I'd bear"). Young toy designer Lainie Commins is suing her ex-boss, toy manufacturer Brett Toland, for copyright and patent infringement, contending that his cross-eyed bear is a direct steal from hers. When Brett is found shot to death on his yacht, Lainie is arrested and charged with murder. She persuades Hope to represent her even as, we later learn, she commits the first legal sin, lying to her lawyer. From mansions to shacks and yacht club to sleazy venues for lingerie "models," McBain gives us a tour of Gulf Coast Florida that's seldom grand. Unable to reach his usual investigators (the main subplot has PI Warren Chambers urging his colleague Toots Kiley to kick her crack cocaine habit cold turkey), Hope hires 60-something Guthrie Lamb, an old-style PI with major male chauvinist traits. Uh-huh, well check out my enthusiastic reaction to DARLING. The straight forward, reader accessible prose, with no downfield literary juking reminds me a lot of Richard Laymon. Simple, right? Uh-uh, don't be fooled. Accomplished always looks easy. Hodson gets his simple effects by using precise language, including always picking the exact verb not the first serviceable, which eliminates the need for lots of adjectives and adverbs. His fast-paced plotting with no fluff makes for an engaging and compelling story arc, with great closure, perfect last line. Snag a copy of DARLING on my recommendation, read it, and then:
