Descirption: A lively exploration of the joys of a not-so-dead language
From the acclaimed novelist and Oxford professor Nicola Gardini, a personal and passionate look at the Latin language: its history, its authors, its essential role in education, and its enduring impact on modern life-whether we call it "dead" or not. What use is Latin? It's a question we're often asked by those who see the language of Cicero as no more than a cumbersome heap of ruins, something to remove from the curriculum. In this sustained meditation, Gardini gives us his sincere and brilliant reply: Latin is, quite simply, the means of expression that made us-and continues to make us-who we are. In Latin, the rigorous and inventive thinker Lucretius examined the nature of our world; the poet Propertius told of love and emotion in a dizzying variety of registers; Caesar affirmed man's capacity to shape reality through reason; Virgil composed the Aeneid , without which we'd see all of Western history in a different light. In Long Live Latin , Gardini shares his deep love for the language-enriched by his tireless intellectual curiosity-and warmly encourages us to engage with a civilization that has never ceased to exist, because it's here with us now, whether we know it or not. Thanks to his careful guidance, even without a single lick of Latin grammar readers can discover how this language is still capable of restoring our sense of identity, with a power that only useless things can miraculously express.
Review
"This love letter to Latin enthralls, illuminates, and convinces. Nobody could possibly describe Latin as a dead or useless language after reading it." ― David Crystal, author of <span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: 600">How Language Works "A brilliant reminder that the supposedly dead language is alive and kicking―and still the most influential language in the world." ― Harry Mount, author of Carpe Diem: Put a Little Latin in Your Life "Highlighting the particular charms in the styles and attitudes of Latin's greatest writers, this book will open many eyes to the unexpected pleasures of Latin." ― Nicholas Ostler, author of Empires of the Word: A Language History of the World

Descirption: How the clash between the civil rights firebrand and the father of modern conservatism continues to illuminate America's racial divide
On February 18, 1965, an overflowing crowd packed the Cambridge Union in Cambridge, England, to witness a historic televised debate between James Baldwin, the leading literary voice of the civil rights movement, and William F. Buckley Jr., a fierce critic of the movement and America's most influential conservative intellectual. The topic was "the American dream is at the expense of the American Negro," and no one who has seen the debate can soon forget it. Nicholas Buccola's The Fire Is upon Us is the first book to tell the full story of the event, the radically different paths that led Baldwin and Buckley to it, the controversies that followed, and how the debate and the decades-long clash between the men continues to illuminate America's racial divide today.
Born in New York City only fifteen months apart, the...

Descirption: <span style="font-weight: 600; font-style: italic">All Hell Breaking Loose is an eye-opening examination of climate change from the perspective of the U.S. military.
<span style="font-weight: 600; font-style: italic">
The Pentagon, unsentimental and politically conservative, might not seem likely to be worried about climate change-still linked, for many people, with polar bears and coral reefs. Yet of all the major institutions in American society, none take climate change as seriously as the U.S. military. Both as participants in climate-triggered conflicts abroad, and as first responders to hurricanes and other disasters on American soil, the armed services are already confronting the impacts of global warming. The military now regards climate change as one of the top threats to American national security-and is busy developing strategies to cope with it. Drawing on previously obscure reports and government documents, renowned security expert Michael Klare sho that the U.S. military sees the climate threat as imperiling the country on several fronts at once. Droughts and food shortages are stoking conflicts in ethnically divided nations, with "climate refugees" producing worldwide havoc. Pandemics and other humanitarian disasters will increasingly require extensive military involvement. The melting Arctic is creating new seaways to defend. And rising seas threaten American cities and military bases themselves. While others still debate the causes of global warming, the Pentagon is intensely focused on its effects. Its response makes it clear that where it counts, the immense impact of climate change is not in doubt. *
Review
"A well-researched and expertly written analysis... Its unique and important perspective makes All Hell Breaking Loose a standout among climate change titles."
<span style="font-weight: 600; font-style: italic">―Booklist (starred review) "With an impressively global breadth of knowledge, Michael Klare sho us the various ways in which the Pentagon understands all the dimensions of climate change―and is planning to cope with it. After all, our armed forces are, among other things, a worldwide apparatus for intelligence-gathering and strategic planning. On this greatest issue of our times, we ignore their findings at our peril."
―Adam Hochschild, author of Lessons from a Dark Time and King Leopold's Ghost "After a lifetime of critical reporting on our war machine, Michael Klare has the contacts and insights to make this new book very useful indeed: it sho that inside the Pentagon people have begun to take climate change quite seriously, and helps us think about what might mean going forward. Fascinating reporting!"
―Bill McKibben, author of Falter: Has the Human Game Begun to Play Itself Out?
"Michael Klare has done a masterful job of capturing key points in the U.S. military's pragmatic approach to climate change. As he sho, the military is building resilience in its own training, testing, and ability to respond, and is clear-eyed about warming's effects in catalyzing chaos and crises abroad that it may be called upon to respond to."
―General Ron Keys, United States Air Force (retired), chairman of the CNA Military Advisory Board "Michael Klare does an exemplary job of recounting not only <span style="font-weight: 600; font-style: italic">how military leaders view climate change differently than politicians on either end of the political spectrum, but <span style="font-weight: 600; font-style: italic">why they do so. Seamlessly weaving together a narrative of Pentagon reports and compelling testimony, he sho that the military sees climate change as a threat to its capacity to defend the nation."
―John Conger,** former Principal Deputy Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller)

Descirption: Veteran diplomatic correspondent Paul Richter goes behind the battles and the headlines to show how American ambassadors are the unconventional warriors in the '. world-running local government, directing drone strikes, nation-building, and risking their lives on the front lines.
The State Department's heroes are the front-line diplomats who have been unheralded, but crucial in the line of national defense for two decades of wars in the Middle East. In The Ambassadors , Paul Richter shares the astonishing, true-life stories of four expeditionary diplomats who "do the hardest things in the hardest places."
We'll see Ryan Crocker's effort to organize a new Afghan government after the fall of the Taliban, even threatening the life of a Pashtun warlord, a US ally, to ensure that a column of tanks could join US forces in the biggest battle of the Afghan war. Robert Ford, the sole American official for the province of Najaf in central Iraq, tries to restart the economy and deal with growing militia violence-and is taken hostage by a Shia militia. In Syria, he is chased by government thugs for defying the country's ruler. J. Christopher Stevens is smuggled into Libya as U.S. Envoy to the rebels during its bloody civil war, then returns as ambassador only to be killed during a terror attach in Benghazi. War-zone veteran Anne Patterson is sent to Pakistan, considered the world's most dangerous country, to broker deals that prevent a government collapse and to help guide the secret war on jihadists.
Richter's account of the role of America's diplomats in the wars in the Middle East and the '. world supplies a crucial and-until now-missing part of how these wars are being fought. An important addition to appreciating the roles of these diplomats, and an in-depth look into the complexity and length of these wars and nation-building, The Ambassadors is a critical piece of modern day history. **
