మహాభారతం ప్రకారం, అతను చేపల పట్టే వాడి కుమార్తె సత్యవతి మరియు వశిష్ట వంశంలో ఒక ఋషి అయిన సంచరించే బ్రాహ్మణుడైన పరాశర కుమారుడు. అతను ఉత్తరప్రదేశ్‌లోని జలౌన్ జిల్లాలోని కల్పికి సమీపంలో ఉన్న యమునా నదిలో బాదరా చెట్లతో కప్పబడిన ఒక ద్వీపంలో జన్మించాడు . అతను ముదురు రంగులో ఉన్నాడు మరియు అందువల్ల కృష్ణ (నలుపు) అనే పేరుతో పిలవబడ్డాడు మరియు ద్వైపాయన అనే పేరు కూడా ఉంది , అంటే 'ద్వీపంలో జన్మించినవాడు'. పిల్లవాడు పుట్టిన వెంటనే పెద్దవాడు అయ్యాడు; ఒక సన్యాసి జీవితాన్ని స్వీకరించి , అతను త్వరలోనే గొప్ప ఋషులలో ఒకడు అయ్యాడు.

Adrika

 

A devastri. Since apsaras were known to frolic in the rivers during the night, others stayed away from the place during that time. Once a poor bramin reached there for his evening rituals, while Adrika was cavorting with the gandharvas. The apasaras saw the old bramin and resented his presence. Adrika traveled underwater and caught the Bramin’s leg. He fell into the river, understood what had happened and cursed Adrika into becoming a fish. According to Devibhagavata Dwitiyaskanda, from then on, Adrika lived in the Yamuna in the form of a fish.

Once Vasu, king of Chedi, went for a hunt. When he was tired, he rested under a flowery tree. Sometime later he felt a strong sensation of lust and ejaculated. Since he didn’t want to waste his semen, he wrapped it in a leaf and gave it to an eagle to leave at his palace. Another eagle saw it carrying a packet and started a fight. In their tussle, the packet fell into the river. Adrika, the fish, found it soon, and ate it , and became pregnant. Later, a fisherman caught the fish, and when he slit open its stomach, found two human babies – a boy and a girl. The king heard about this and sent his soldiers to bring the boy to him.

The girl was left with the fisherman. The boy became famous later as king Matsya and the girl became Satyavati (also known as Matsyagandhi , Yojanagandhi) meanwhile, Adrika had been freed from her curse when she delivered the human babies. Satyavati used to help her father ferry people across the river.

According to Mahabharata Adiparva Chapter 63, once Parashara came by that way, impregnated Satyavati and that child was Vyasa.

According to Mahabharata Adiparva Chapter 122 verse 61, Adrika visited earth once more during the birth of Arjuna.
