The first time she saw him was on one evening when she was coming back from the temple with her children. He had parked his motorbike under a tree. As he saw her approaching, he quickly threw the cigarette he was smoking and snuffed it out with his foot. She was surprised to see him there as he had visited her at home that morning. They had some general conversation at that time especially about some movie gossip as he knew she was interested in movies. Her husband had no such interest as his concern was news and business-related matters. So, she had no one to share her interests as she was mostly a homebody.
“Hey what are you doing here,” she asked thinking that he must have come to see her and seeing she was not home, had waited for her here.
She also knew he was attracted to her by the way he looked at her sometimes when he thought she did not notice. This was not new to her as she had seen a number of men who had admired her beauty. As it did not affect her directly in anyway, she saw no harm in it. In-fact it pleased her as she felt a little proud about her good looks.
Her children ran to him pleased to see him there. After all he was the uncle who bought sweets and chocolates for them whenever he visited them. Even then she knew his real reason was to sweet talk to her and she was amused that someone younger than her was so enamoured by her. She had wrongly presumed that all his efforts would not have any effect as after all she loved her husband very much.
“Hi, uncle how are you.” They said in chorus, “are you coming to our house.” They were eagerly looking to see if he had brought the usual stuff for them.
“Hi kids, no, I just came here to spend sometime alone. This was my usual spot since my school days. Your father to used to come here sometimes with me during our school days.”
They were disappointed he did not have the usual sweets or chocolates for them. “Okay uncle, we are going to Sister Pramila’s house to play.” Looking at their mother they asked pleadingly,” Ma, can we?”
“Okay but come back soon, you two have homework to complete.”
“Okay, ma, sure,” they shouted in unison as the gaily ran away.
Prabu and Meera looked at them with a smile on their faces as they disappeared from their eyesight. Meera could not understand why she had a feeling of disappointment that Prabu’s purpose for being here was not actually to see her. She didn’t understand that the feeling of being wanted and admired gives a feel-good factor. She didn’t have the educational level to understand that the admiration and flirting releases the chemical dopamine in the brain causing someone to yearn for that feeling again.
She looked at a couple of crushed cigarette buds on the floor. “So, this is your place to smoke in peace. I don’t know what you men find in cigarettes. I keep telling my husband to stop but he doesn’t listen,” she said a little sadly.
“We started this habit during our school days and now it is difficult to give up. I am trying to quit but failing so far.”
“You men are weak, you cannot even give this up,” she said with disdain.
“Why are you so against it?” he asked. She noticed that he had stopped addressing her as Bhabhi whenever her husband was not around.
“I don’t like the smell, I’ll make my husband brush his teeth before he comes near me,” she laughed.
“In that case I will quit it from today.”
She was little taken aback. Did he mean he was quitting it so that he could get close to her or quitting because she didn’t like people smoking. No, no, It has to be because I don’t like people smoking, she tried to tell herself without much conviction.
Trying to make light banter of what he said Meera laughingly said,” I don’t believe these types of promises by men. The moment you go, turn around the corner you will start smoking again.”
“I really mean it, see,” Prabu took a packet of cigarettes from his pocket and crushed it before throwing it away.
It really pleased Meera that he would do that just because she didn’t like it but again trying to make light of it she said,” that was probably an empty packet, it got crushed so easily.”
He looked sheepishly at her. She liked that look, not his usual over-confident look. “Actually, there was still two cigarettes inside it.”
“Ha hah, only two, no wonder you could afford to throw it away,” she said in a gentle mocking manner.
“Really promise, I mean it.”
He pulled her hand and placed his palm on hers in a classic way of a person making a promise and then as if suddenly realising that he had taken hold of her hand quickly released it.
Meera was shocked he had boldly grabbed her hand. Seeing the shocked expression on her face he quickly apologised.
“I’m so sorry, please forgive me, I did that unthinkingly, sorry.” It was considered very bad behaviour in that small-town setting and at that period of time when this happened, to grab a woman’s hand especially one who was married.
As Meera slowly came out of her shock she was confused as to what to do. Should she get angry or not make a big issue out of it and accept his apology. He seemed contrite about his action. Wasn’t it she who provoked him, by dismissing his resolution to stop smoking as something not genuine. What really disturbed her was that there had been a jolt to her heart when his hand grabbed hers. Was that a jolt of consternation or a jolt of thrill. She didn’t have the anger she should have and that disturbed her.
“Prabu, what is this, why did you do that,” she at least had to show him that she was upset.
“I’m really sorry, I should have been more in control. I usually don’t say things I don’t mean, and when you were disbelieving my only thought was to show I was sincere in what I said.”
This was where he was lying. He did that on purpose. He wanted to see her reaction. Would she really get very angry and upset or she would accept his apology. If she got very angry then she still saw him as a stranger and was just tolerating him because he was her husband’s friend but if she accepted his apology and was mollified by it then she too had started liking him internally even if she didn’t realise it yet.
If she had really got angry then there was still a way out for him. He could apologise even more profusely vowing that there was no dishonourable intention on his part and that it was just a spur of the moment thing. There would have been no way of disproving his intention. Only thing it would have a great, maybe even calamitous, effect on his efforts to seduce this gorgeous wife of his friend but he had to take that risk. A calculated risk as during the many days he spent in their home he could see she was getting to be fond of him. She could talk to him on unimportant matters, entertaining matters that was pleasing and interesting. With her husband, the little time they were together after he came back home, it was usually the serious matters of children’s education, household matters etc. From a young age her husband had great responsibilities thrust on his shoulders and hence he had not been inclined to involve or give notice to unimportant things.
Prabu was pleased that she did not truly get upset. It was likely that she would not mention this incident to her husband. He was getting there in his goal to enjoy this most sensuous housewife. Now he had to change the fondness she has for him to desire for him.
“Okay, Prabu it’s getting late, I’ve got to go home, bye.”
“Bye Meera, I’ll come later in the evening when Saravana is at home.”
She walked back home with the words ‘Meera’ ringing in her ears. He had called her Meera .. called her by name and not Bhabhi for the first time. The worse part is she liked it, it did not make her feel old.
That evening even after her husband had come home there was no sign of Prabu. It was now almost 8.30pm. Meera’s eyes would inadvertently go to the front door whenever the sound of a motorbike passed by.
“He said he would come but what happened to him. Why is he late?” she thought to herself and then scolded herself for anxiously waiting for him to turn up.
Idiot, idiot, why are you looking forward to him coming here. He is just a friend, forget it you stupid she rebuked herself. Finally, there was a sound of a motorbike stopping in front of the house. Without realising she was revealing her eagerness she quickly walked to the front door. Luckily her husband was in the bathroom at that time and did not notice this odd behaviour of his wife. As she opened the front door Saravanan too entered the hall. As Prabu walked in both Meera and Saravanan were shocked to see his condition. A bit of his shirt and trousers were torn. His clothes were covered with mud and dirt.
“Good god, look at you. What happened, did you have an accident? asked Saravanan.
There was concern written all over Meera’s face that Prabu did not fail to notice. He was right, she was getting to like him a lot. He had purposely come late today. He had not had any accident. He himself tore a bit of his trousers and shirt and rubbed dirt and mud over it. He needed to create sympathy for him. This would drive all thoughts of what he did this evening from Meera’s mind. Women always have feelings of sympathy easily. It is easier to change sympathy to something else.
“My bike slipped on the mud and I fell down. You know it had rained last night and there was mud on some of the dirt roads. “
“Are you okay, did you get hurt,” Meera asked worriedly.
“No, just a little ache here and there but no serious damage. My pride was hurt more than my body,” Prabu smiled pleased by her concern.
Saravanan typical of a man asked,” was there any damage to your bike.”
Meera stared at her husband, thinking how callous he was but Saravanan’s attention was on Prabu and did not notice his wife giving him a dismayed look.
“Luckily, nothing happened to it just a little scratches here and there.”
Now Meera stared at Prabu,” you men are terrible, you are more concerned about the motorbike than the person.”
Saravanan and Prabu smiled at each other as if to say ‘women, they don’t understand things’.
That look between the men infuriated her even more. “Don’t just stand there go clean yourself at least,” Meera told Prabu. “See if you can get him any clean clothes dear,” she told her husband.
Prabu walked towards the bathroom that was just beyond the kitchen as Meera accompanied him. He purposefully walked with a little limp though he had no pain at all. Saravanan went to his room to see if he could find any clean clothes for Prabu.
“Does it hurt a lot?” Meera asked Prabu.
“No, it’s okay, just a little,” Prabu pretended that he was trying to conceal a greater pain that he was actually feeling.
“You should be careful, why ride your bike fast.”
“It was late and I wanted to see you …all.” There was a very slight gap between you and all. Prabu hoped Meera would have noticed it and realised who he really missed seeing.
She stopped in the kitchen while Prabu walked behind to the bathroom. There was splashing sound as he cleaned himself. Saravanan walked into the kitchen with a T-shirt, a pair of trousers and a towel.
“He’s in the bathroom,” she told her husband.
Saravanan walked towards the bathroom and after a while the splashing sound stopped. After a while Saravanan came out with Prabu’s trousers in his hands.
“He cannot get into my trousers, he is too big, I’ll get him a lungi. He has to wear his own trousers so can you iron this, so that it’s at least a little dry.”
What too big!! Oh, he meant his body size was too big. Why did something else enter my mind she thought embarrassed by her thought process.
Prabu’s trousers were wet in patches where he had washed it. “I’ll go get him a lungi,” Saravanan said as he walked out.
Prabu walked out from the bathroom to the kitchen. He had the towel around his waist but Meera could see the wet cloth sticking to his strong thighs.
“Can you iron this shirt too, see his T-shirt is too tight, it looks like a blouse.”
Meera looked at him. Indeed, her husband’s t shirt was like a blouse as it clung tightly to his sturdy body. She smiled at the sight of him. The tight t-shirt looked absurd on his body but at the same time revealed his attractive build.
“Give it to me, I’ll iron them both,” Meera said as she took the shirt from him.
Her eyes lingered longer than she liked on his body. You silly girl, stop admiring his body, you are a married woman, she censured herself.
“Thank you,” Prabu said as she took his somewhat dry clothes from his hand. There was a slight friction between their hands as he took the clothes.
Was the touch intentional by him she pondered. Is he taking too much liberty and am I allowing that??
