నేను ఈ వ్యాసాలు రాయడానికి ప్రేరణ కారణం ఒక విమాన ప్రయాణం. భారతదేశం వెళుతూ, శాన్ ఫ్రాన్సిస్కోలో ఉదయం 8గంటలకి బయలుదేరి, నూ యార్క్ చేరుకునేసరికి సాయంత్రం అయిదు అయింది. పరుగుబాట (runway) మీదకి దిగడానికి విమానం సంసిద్ధం అవుతూ ఉండగా, ‘మనం దిగబోయే పరుగుబాట మీద మరొక విమానం ఉంది. కంట్రోలు టవర్లో ప్రజలు నిద్రపోతున్నట్లు ఉన్నారు. మరో చుట్టు తిరిగి వస్తాను. అరగంట సేపు ఓపిక పట్టండి,’ అని చోదకుడు విమానం జోరు పెంచుతూ పైకి లేపేసరికి ఇహ చేసేది ఏమీ లేకపోవడంతో నా కుర్చీకి ఎదురుగా ఉన్న టి.వి. లో ఏదైనా ఇరవై నిమిషాల కార్యక్రమం చూద్దామని వెతకడం ఉపక్రమించేను. ‘అపస్వరం అనే ఏపిల్ పండు కథ. పదిహేను నిముషాలుట. చూడడం మొదలుపెట్టేను.

పురాతన గ్రీసు దేశపు కథ. ఇంతకు పూర్వం నేనెప్పుడూ వినలేదు. ఆసక్తితో చూసేను. గమ్యం చేరుకోగానే గూగుల్‌లో వెతికేను. చాల ప్రాచుర్యం ఉన్న కథ. మా అమ్మాయిని అడిగితే, ‘చిన్నప్పుడు హైకాలేజ్‌లో చదివేను’ అని చెప్పింది. పుస్తకాల పురుగుని అయినా ఈ కథ నా కళ్ళపడడానికి ఎనభై ఏళ్ళు పట్టిందంటే ఈ కథని వినని వాళ్ళు ఇంకా ఎంతమంది ఉంటారో అనిపించింది. ఈ కథ గురించి పరిశోధన చేస్తూ ఉంటే ఆసక్తికరమైన అంశాలు ఎన్నో తెలుసుకున్నాను. వాటన్నిటిని క్రోడీకరించి వ్యాసాలుగా రాసేను. మన పురాణ గాథల గురించి లోతుగా అర్థం చేసుకోవాలంటే ఇతరుల పురాణ గాథలు కూడా అధ్యయనం చెయ్యాలి.

ఇంగ్లీషులో myth అనే మాటని తెలుగులో పురాణ గాథ అనొచ్చు. పురాణ గాథలకి రెండు ప్రయోజనాలు ఉన్నాయి. మొదటి ప్రయోజనం: పిల్లలు కుతూహలంతో అడిగే, ఇబ్బంది పెట్టే, ప్రశ్నలకి తేలికగా సమాధానాలు చెప్పడానికి. ఏమిటా ప్రశ్నలు? ఈ ప్రపంచాన్ని ఎవ్వరు తయారుచేసేరు? ఎప్పుడు తయారుచేసేరు? ఈ ప్రపంచం ఎన్నాళ్ళు ఉంటుంది? మొట్టమొదట ఎవ్వరు పుట్టేరు? చచ్చిపోయిన తరువాత ఎక్కడకి వెళ్తాము? మొదలైనవి. రెండవ ప్రయోజనం: మనం ఉంటున్న సాంఘిక వ్యవస్థని, మన ఆచార వ్యవహారాలని సమర్ధించడం కొరకు. సనాతన కాలపు గ్రీసు దేశపు సమాజంలో దేవుళ్ళ గురించి, దేవతల గురించి, సాహసోపేతమైన ధీరుల గురించి, భయంకరమైన రాక్షసాకారాల గురించి, వికృతమైన చంపూ మానవులు (human-animal hybrids) గురించి ఎన్నెన్నో కథలు ప్రచారంలో ఉన్నాయి. తుఫానులు ఎందుకు వస్తున్నాయి? అగ్నిపర్వతాలు ఎందుకు పేలుతున్నాయి? భూకంపాలకి కారణం ఏమిటి? పూజలు, వ్రతాలు, మొదలైన కర్మకాండలు ఎందుకు చెయ్యాలి? మొదలైన ప్రశ్నలు అప్పుడే కాదు ఇప్పుడు కూడా అడుగుతున్నారు. వీటికి సమాధానాలు చెప్పడం కోసం పురాణ గాథలు పుట్టుకొచ్చాయి.

హిందువులకి వేదాల వంటి పురాతన ప్రమాణ గ్రంథాలు ఉన్నాయి. క్రైస్తవులకి బైబిల్ ఉంది. కంచు యుగం (Bronze age) రోజులలో, గ్రీసు దేశంలో, వారికి ఉన్నవల్లా తరతరాలుగా వస్తున్న మౌఖిక సాహిత్యము, సంప్రదాయాలూ. ఆ కథలు ఈ నోటా ఆ నోటా ప్రయాణం చేసి, కాలక్రమేణా మార్పులు చెంది, చివరికి లిఖిత రూపంలో గ్రంథస్థం అయేయి. ఈ రకంగా గ్రంథస్థం అయిన వాటిల్లో చెప్పుకోదగ్గవి హోమర్ (Homer) సాధారణ శకానికి పూర్వం 8వ శతాబ్దంలో రాసిన ఇలియడ్ (Iliad), ఆడిసీ (Odyssey) అనే రెండు గ్రంథాలు. వీటిల్లో ట్రోయ్ యుద్ధం గురించి కొన్ని వివరాలు కనిపిస్తాయి. ఈ యుద్ధం పైకి చూడడానికి రెండు మానవ సైన్యాల మధ్య యుద్ధంలా కనిపించినా, ఈ యుద్ధానికి ప్రేరణకారకులు దేవతలు, వారి మధ్య ఉండే ఈర్ష్య, అసూయ, మొదలైన వైషమ్యాలు.

హోమర్ తరువాత ఒక శతాబ్దం గడచిన పిమ్మట (ఉరమరగా సా. శ. పూ. 7వ శతాబ్దంలో) హెసియోడ్ (Hesiod) అనే చరిత్రకారుడు రాసిన థియోగనీ (Theogony) అనే గ్రంథంలో ఈ ప్రపంచం ఎలా పుట్టిందని ప్రాచీన గ్రీకులు నమ్మేవారో మొదటిసారి చూస్తాం. ఈ గ్రంథంలోనే ఆదిలో ఒక అస్తవ్యస్తమైన పరిస్థితి నుండి గయేఅ(Gaea) అనే భూదేవత పుట్టడం, తరువాత ఆమె ప్రాథమిక ప్రకృతి శక్తులకు ఎలా జన్మనిచ్చిందో, తదుపరి వారి నుండి రాక్షసగణాలు, దేవగణాలు ఎలా పుట్టుకొచ్చేయో, ఆయా వంశవృక్షాలతో సహా కూలంకషంగా వర్ణించబడ్డాయి. కాలక్రమేణా ఈ కథలని ఆధారంగా చేసుకుని శిల్పులు శిల్పాలు మలిచేరు, చిత్రకారులు బొమ్మలు గీసేరు, కవులు గ్రంథాలు రచించేరు, నిర్మాతలు సినిమాలు తీసేరు. చిట్టచివరకు అధునాతన కాలంలో వ్యాపార సంస్థలు కూడా ఆ కాలపు పేర్లని, శాల్తీలని వాడుకుంటున్నారు.

నేడు మనం బజారులో కొనుక్కునే అనేక వస్తువుల పేర్లు గ్రీకు పురాణ గాథల నుండి సేకరించినవే! పాదరక్షలని చేసే నైకీ (Nike) సంస్థ పేరు ఎక్కడినుండి వచ్చిందని అనుకుంటున్నారు? చంద్రుడి దగ్గరకు మానవులని మోసుకెళ్లిన రాకెట్ అపాలో (Apollo) పేరు ఎక్కడిదో తెలుసా? అమెజాన్.కామ్ కంపెనీ పేరులో అమెజాన్ ఎక్కడినుండి వచ్చిందో తెలుసా? అమెరికాలో బట్టలు ఉతుక్కునే ఒక సబ్బు వ్యాపార నామం ఏజాక్స్ (Ajax), అమెరికాలో ఆటలాడే జట్లు పేర్లు టైటన్స్, స్పార్టన్స్, ట్రోజన్స్, వగైరా పేర్లు అన్నీ గ్రీసు దేశపు పురాణాలలో పేర్లే.

గ్రీసు దేశపు (లేదా, గ్రీకు) నాగరికత పతనం అయిన తరువాత, ట్రోయ్ యుద్ధంలో బతికి బయటపడ్డ యోధులు కొందరు ఇటలీ చేరుకుని రోమ్ సామ్రాజ్యపు సంస్థాపనకి కారకులు అయేరు. అప్పుడు గ్రీకు కథలకి సమాంతరంగా రోమ్ పురాణ గాథలు పుట్టుకొచ్చేయి. ఈ కథలలో పాత్రల పేర్లు మారేయి కానీ మౌలికంగా గ్రీకు పాత్రలనే పోలి ఉంటాయి.

ఇక్కడ ఉటంకించిన అంశాలన్నిటినీ కేవలం ఒక నఖచిత్రంలా స్పర్శించినా ఇది పెద్ద గ్రంథం అవుతుంది. అందుకని కొన్ని ముఖ్యమైన అంశాలని మాత్రమే ముచ్చటించేను.

"క్రీస్తు శకం" కు నవీన రూపమే సామాన్య శకం. ఇంగ్లీషులో దీన్ని కామన్ ఎరా (Common Era) అని లేదా కరెంట్ ఎరా (Current Era) అనీ అంటారు. లాటిన్ భాషలో యానో డొమిని (Anno Domini -AD) ని కామన్ ఎరా (Common Era -CE) గాను,

"క్రీస్తు పూర్వం" (Before Christ -BC) ను బిఫోర్ కామన్ ఎరా (Before Common Era -BCE) గానూ వాడుతున్నారు.
వీటిని తెలుగులో సామాన్య శకం (సా.శ.), సామాన్య శక పూర్వం (సా.పూ. లేదా సా.శ.పూ.) గా వ్యవహరిస్తున్నారు.

ఈ మార్పుకు, మతతటస్థత ప్రధాన కారణం. ఈ మార్పు, పేరులోనే తప్ప కాలగణనలో కాదు.
ఉదాహరణకు క్రీ.పూ. 512, సా.శ.పూ. 512 గాను,
క్రీ.శ 1757, సా.శ. 1757 గాను మారుతాయి.

గ్రీసు దేశపు (లేదా, గ్రీకు) నాగరికత పతనం అయిన తరువాత, ట్రోయ్ యుద్ధంలో బతికి బయటపడ్డ యోధులు కొందరు ఇటలీ చేరుకుని రోమ్ సామ్రాజ్యపు సంస్థాపనకి కారకులు అయేరు. అప్పుడు గ్రీకు కథలకి సమాంతరంగా రోమ్ పురాణ గాథలు పుట్టుకొచ్చేయి. ఈ కథలలో పాత్రల పేర్లు మారేయి కానీ మౌలికంగా గ్రీకు పాత్రలనే పోలి ఉంటాయి.

ఇక్కడ ఉటంకించిన అంశాలన్నిటినీ కేవలం ఒక నఖచిత్రంలా స్పర్శించినా ఇది పెద్ద గ్రంథం అవుతుంది. అందుకని కొన్ని ముఖ్యమైన అంశాలని మాత్రమే ముచ్చటించేను.

"క్రీస్తు శకం" కు నవీన రూపమే సామాన్య శకం. ఇంగ్లీషులో దీన్ని కామన్ ఎరా (Common Era) అని లేదా కరెంట్ ఎరా (Current Era) అనీ అంటారు. లాటిన్ భాషలో యానో డొమిని (Anno Domini -AD) ని కామన్ ఎరా (Common Era -CE) గాను,

"క్రీస్తు పూర్వం" (Before Christ -BC) ను బిఫోర్ కామన్ ఎరా (Before Common Era -BCE) గానూ వాడుతున్నారు.
వీటిని తెలుగులో సామాన్య శకం (సా.శ.), సామాన్య శక పూర్వం (సా.పూ. లేదా సా.శ.పూ.) గా వ్యవహరిస్తున్నారు.

ఈ మార్పుకు, మతతటస్థత ప్రధాన కారణం. ఈ మార్పు, పేరులోనే తప్ప కాలగణనలో కాదు.

Whatever her new reality, Kamala's warmth to me is unchanged. She shows me a shiny silver cell phone resting like an idol on a pedestal, and says it is a gift from thirty-eight-year-old Sadiq Ali, ---c scholar, national '. League MP from Malabar, and her absent lover.

All day she wears the phone on a gold belt slung rebelliously around the waist of her black dress, keeping the line open and, as he requested, "dedicated to our love." As her bangles flash and her visitors delight, Kamala listens for the phone strapped to her body. She longs for Sadiq Ali to call. And when the visitors leave, she tells me that after their first meeting, he called for days, at midnight, every night".

Sadiq Ali asked Kamala's cousin to arrange a meeting. He said he had admired Kamala for years and wanted to meet her. Kamala gave him a two-hour appointment, and Sadiq Ali drove five hours from his small town to Cochin.

"He sat at my feet laughing the attractive, reckless laugh of a monarch. He was a preacher who delighted large audiences with ballads and narratives lasting five hours. He held his listeners in a spell with his four-octave range and a pure voice that resembled a newborn's cry."

Sadiq Ali charmed Kamala with his eloquence, scholarship, rough wavy hair, white teeth, and "smile of wondrous innocence." "But I cannot touch your lips," Kamala responded. Her grandmother had warned that '.s ate the corpses of sacred cows, which made their breath stink, and that touching them led to exile. "A staunch vegetarian like me would never touch the mouth of a mlecha [ flesh eater]," she said.

"Then I will feed you," Sadiq Ali offered, breaking food into small pieces.
By the time he left Kamala's home, his flirtatious play had stirred long-buried feelings and desires. "For many years I had not witnessed the blush spread on the cheek of a young man finding himself embarked on a new love."

And it had been many decades since she had felt desire, that slow ache in the abdomen, blood surging as on a fast-moving swing.

అంతా తావీజు మహిమ!

బొడ్డు తాడును పిల్లలకు వెండి మొలతాడులో కట్టి భద్రపరిచే హిందూ సాంప్రదాయం అనే సైన్సును క్రమంగా తాయత్తు మహిమగా (తావిజు మహిమ) మార్చి తర్వాత మూఢనమ్మకంగా ప్రచారమై మన సాంప్రదాయం మనమే వదులుకొనేలా చేసి వేలకోట్లు వ్యాపారం చేస్తున్న ఆధునిక సాంకేతిక పరిజ్ఞానం.
తాయత్తు అని మనం చాలా అవహేళన చేసి వెక్కిరించే ఆ తాయత్తులలోనే గతంలో పుట్టిన ప్రతి బిడ్డ నుంచి వేరు చేసిన బొడ్డుతాడును (Umbilical Cord) పెట్టి మొలతాడుకు కట్టేవారు. దానికే మరొక పేరు బొడ్డు తాయత్తు. మందులు లేని వైద్యానికి అందని ఎన్నో రోగాలు ఈ బొడ్డుని అరగతీసి నాకిస్తే తగ్గేవి..

1740 లో డా. థామస్ క్రూసో అనే ఆంగ్లేయుడు (ఈస్ట్ ఇండియా కంపెనీ సర్జన్) బెంగాలులో పర్యటించాడు. అతని పర్యటనలో ఒక ఆశ్చర్యకమైన విషయం వెలుగు చూసింది. భారతదేశంలో అమ్మవారుతో (చికెన్ ఫాక్స్) చనిపోయే వారి సంఖ్య చాలా తక్కువగా దాదాపు లేని విధంగా కనిపించిది. ఈ విషయమై తన పరిశోధన మొదలెట్టాడు.

The notification regarding the recruitment examination of probationary officer/ Management Trainee is likely to be published by next week by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS). Last year, the notification was released on August 9 and the registration for the preliminary examination for the probationary officer post had begun on August 14. Interested candidates will have to register through online mode.

The aspirants who will clear the preliminary examination will have to write the main examinations which have been scheduled to be conducted on November 30. The prelims examination will be conducted on October 12, 13, 19 and 20.
