I am going to explain some of the stuff I read online about porn:

Every human being wants to feel good about something.

Whenever we seek something (be it sexual craving or physical craving like a chocolate cookie), a chemical called "dopamine" gets involved. Whenever we watch porn, we feel excitement and rush. This feeling is caused by dopamine release inside our system. Dopamine is what motivates us and get us excited about anything in life. Let's say you are travelling to your favorite place, you get excited. Here also dopamine is involved. 

In simple words, dopamine is a seeking chemical. Whenever we seek something with intense emotions, that's because of dopamine. 

Let's say you get an orgasm or let's say you heard news of your job promotion, you feel very very happy and you forget about everything for a moment and stay happy. Some people get tears too because of overwhelming happiness. This happens because of reward system in our brain. Whenever we seek something, we operate on dopamine but when we get the actual rewards, brain releases opioids inside the system.

Human brains have opioids and dopamine receptors. Just like how nose can smell or ears can hear sounds, these receptors can detect either opioids or dopamine. 

However, human beings have a flaw. Our dopamine receptors are more active than opioids receptors. Dopamine System is stronger than the Opioid System. We seek more than we are satisfied. Sometimes, we eat more food when taste feels good even though we feel stomach full. This results in obesity, overeating and all sorts of bad behaviors. 

Now, let's look at porn. 

All potentially addictive substances and activities elevate dopamine (dopamine surging). Porn hijacks the circuits and mechanisms that are evolved for normal rewards. In other words, we feel good whenever we observe a beautiful sunset but porn or sex can override those feelings. If you feel sexual about your gf while watching a sun rise or sun set, you will more likely chose to get some place and have sex instead of watching sunset. Sexual desire overrides other desires. In other words, sexual energy is more powerful than any other day to day activity. 

Porn and Sex can increase dopamine in the system more than any other activity. This increase in dopamine is called dopamine surging

Porn is Supernormal Stimulus


Internet Porn is supernormal stimulus. Modern Junk Food and Video Games are also same. Internet Porn violates expectations and therefore surges dopamine.

Porn offers 

1) Endless Sexual Novelty

2) Violation of Expectations

3) Searching and Seeking

4) Anticipation of what's next

5) Shock and Surprise

6) Anxiety (Increases Sexual Arousal)

Just as dopamine decreases, a new porn tab or image can be opened to elevate it again.

Intense emotions can elevate dopamine along with stress, neurotransmitters and hormones. Norepinephrine, Epinephrine, Cortisol increases excitement and amplify Dopamine effects. Forbidden/Shame inducing genres of porn can boost dopamine and also increase stress neurohormones.

With time, porn user's brain can mistake feelings of anxiety with feelings of sexual arousal. This is the reason why people escalate to shocking genres of porn even though they are shocking/taboo/no longer vanilla.

Difference between Sex and other activities:

Sex activates same nerve cells as meth, cocoine, heroin. Let's call it category 1.

Food, Water, Salt etc. activate different set of nerve cells in reward centre. Let's call it category 2.

There is slight overlap of set of nerve cells of two categories. These overlapping nerve cells are category 3.

Lot of things elevate dopamine but activate different categories of nerve cells in reward centre. Sex activates more dopamine than anything else.

Difference between sex and other activities is that many innate circuits are built inside our brain for sexuality and reproduction but no such innate circuits exist for playing dota or watching football. Porn use can alter these innate circuits which other activities don't

Nothing can be compared to Internet Porn. Not cocaine, not meth or any form of activity in human life.

IN TERMS OF CHEMICAL RELEASE, PORN IS EVEN MORE POWERFUL THAN SEX OR DRUGS LIKE HEROINE OR COCAIN OR NICOTINE OR ANY OTHER DRUG AVAILABLE IN THIS WORLD ACCORDING TO SCIENCE. 

BOTH PORN AND SEX ACTIVATES THE SAME AREAS OF BRAIN WHICH ALSO GET ACTIVATED WHEN A PERSON TAKES DRUGS. THIS WHY PORN IS CALLED AS SUPER NORMAL STIMULUS AND THIS WHY SEXUAL DESIRE IS MORE POWERFUL THAN ANY OTHER HUMAN ACTIVITY.
